My theory on the "pushing aside" that occurs when portals close is this:
when a portal closes with an object inside, both planes holding the portals are warped away from the surface on which they were placed and "reach out" to the ends of the object, and whichever portal reaches an end first seals around the object and pushes it out the other end. This all happens at light speed. since the rope is leading the portals to each other, they will eventually be back to back portals. since portals on top of each other cannot exist, the portals are eliminated imediately and the rope is cut at the ceiling/floor. untie the knot and you have two pieces of rope. so go ahead and add "scissors" to Sir_Dwar's list of 101 impractical uses for the ASHPD. |

My theory about things being pushed out of closing portals is that the developers didn't want to work out the physics necessary to dice any given object into thousands of little objects and also wanted to do away with the possibility of Chell getting decapitated while attempting a tricky maneuver.
And of course there is one little hole with your theory. Basically your saying that the edges of the portal are closing pretty much instantaneously and that the object gets pushed out due to sudden forces applied by the shrinking portal boundaries. Given the high speeds, there would also be high pressure and at "light speed" there aren't too many objects that will survive. It's a game. Try not to think about it to much. (Note to self: try not to think so much about little BS explanations aimed at given a realistic reason for minor details of portal physics that are worked in to make programing or game play better.) (Second note to self: stop rambling.) |
