For those who has smoke lag issues, try to set up the mat_dxlevel variable to 81 (Can be done through the console, or by defining a command-line parameter +mat_dxlevel 81). I have no more smoke lag at the moment. Can someone who has this issue give some feedback?

Hello. I managed to get on dod source but it lagged like hell. I got shot and it froze when I was respawning and it closed saying hl2.exe isn't working and now it keeps saying that everytime I try to go on it.

I only just have the minimum processor requirement of 1.7 ghz. I have 1.73... Could this be why I can't play?

Luna

Update:
I have tried possible fixes that I have googled but they do not work. I should note that my processor is an intel centrino duo.... I was told that means I have double the Ghz than what the system says.... or something like that. Also my computer has windows vista, I have heard people have trouble with vista, if this is vista's doing then this is the first problem I have had with it = /

Anyway I keep trying to play dod source and sometimes I get a shot in or I get killed, but still the same thing happens. The error "hl2.exe has stopped working" shows up. Can someone help me before I throw my laptop out of the window!!!! Please!!

Luna, laptops are notoriously bad for playing games on. Means you're running off an integrated video chip, you probably have low memory (maybe a gb?) and you're running vista which is a memory hug...ouch. Have you been updating your operating system as the errors you are referring to where known operating system issues until some of the recent updates. I would definitely suggest you start by running Microsoft Update and installing any missing ones.

Anyway, you need to turn everything down and not use the out of box settings given your equipment.

On your Windows Desktop, go into Start/Settings/Control Panel and select Systems.
Click on Advanced, then select the Performance option Settings button.
Click the Visual Settings tab and then click the Adjust for Best Performance radio button.
Click the Remote tab and make sure none of the Remote selections are enabled (uncheck if they are).

Go into your NVidia Control Panel or ATI, whatever you have (either through the icon on your taskbar or through Start/Settings/Control Panel/NVidia Control Panel) and adjust these settings in your 3D settings options:

* Anti-Aliasing : Application Preference
* Maximum Resolution : Application Preference
* Anisotropic Filtering : Application Preference
* Anisotropic Filtering Method : Application Preference
* Texture Preference : High Performance
* Mipmap Detail Level : High Performace
* Wait for Vertical Sync : Always OFF

Go to this site and follow the directions for your operating system to shutoff unnecessary settings using Start/Run and services.msc command(use the Safe settings column):
http://www.blackviper.com

Check on your computer for automated startup programs and shut any off you can start through other means (e.g., opening a program from the start menu) or those you do not need constant access to (use windows defender app to identify and disable the programs --called Software Explorer in your control panel). You do not have enough memory to keep anything as an automatic startup unless critical.

Open up Steam, click on the Settings icon on the bottom of the panel.
Go to the Downloads tab and make sure the Approximate speed of your internet conection drop down selection reads the proper setting for your internet service provider "Cable/Fiber > 10M", if this is set wrong it will choke your system, change it to the right one and click OK.
Go back to the main Steam window and click on the My Games tab. Then right click on "Day of Defeat : Source" in the games list and go to properties.
From here click the "Local Files" tab, First click the "Verify Integrity of Game Cache" and wait for it to finish (may take awhile if you've never done it). When it's finished, click "Defragment Cache Files" and wait for that to finish.

Go into Day of Defeat Source and when you get to the options window, go to Video, Advanced Options and set the following settings:

* Model Detail : Low
* Texture Detail : Low
* Shader Detail : Low
* Water Detail : Simple Reflections
* Shadow Detail : Low
* Antialiasing Mode : 2x
* Filtering Mode : Trilinear
* Wait for Vertical Sync : Disabled
* High Dynamic Range : None

Now you can use one of the fps configs to lower your graphic settings appropriately.

Link in OP is dead - how do I disable sound downloads via config? I have been playing on some medic mod servers and everytime I connect it redownloads the same bandage.mp3 file. I never hear it anyway, so I'd rather skip the download.

Thanks!
