Double click steam, press steam in the top left corner, then click 'go online'.

Unhappy

Good Idea but I don't have the option to turn go online from there.
I only have the options to show steam or hide steam.

I have reinstalled steam many times. The problem still occurs.

This is a more detailed description of the problem:

I have steam on Mac OS X Lion 10.7.3

A few weeks ago a problem occurred, although I was connected to the internet I found myself unable to connect to steam and was stuck in offline mode. After having no success I decided to reinstall steam so I proceeded to delete my games (I didn't have any important saves) and I removed steam. I then went to the Steam website and re downloaded it.

Now my problem has worsened. When I attempt to open steam I get a message saying 'Steam needs to be online to update, but was set to offline mode'. It does not open. So...I don't know what to do. I need to open steam to set it to online mode, but now I'm unable to since it can't update, because its stuck in offline....Paradox lol.

Here is another thread where users get this same problem:
http://forums.steamgames.com/forums/....php?t=1669920

And a youtube video, check the comments:

Please fix this problem or provide me and these other customers with a solution, I have bought many games on steam and would actually like to play them...

Have you sent in a support ticket? This is just a user forum. Though the Steam people do check the forums regularly you can't count on them finding your or the other peoples threads with problems.

In Finder, go to Users -> Your Account -> Library -> Application Support -> and then locate Registry.vdf and open it with TextEdit.

In the Registry.vdf file, find the word "Offline" "1" and then replace 1 with 0 and save it. That's it, you should be able to open Steam now, that's how I fixed mine.
