When "fish" is used, it tends to imply multiple fish of the same species, whereas "fishes" tends to imply multiple species of fish.

In primary school we had to write the plural of a list of words. I put 'fishes' for 'fish' and the teacher read it out and everybody laughed and I was angry because I knew I was right
