Will there be a future port to android?

Hi. I've already bought the game, and I was just wondering, given that an iphone version exists, whether Caster would be coming to other phones too?

Anyway, great game.

We have looked into porting Caster to Android (in addition to webOS and Dreamcast). Unfortunately the current Android NDK doesn't support STL. Caster uses STL extensively and although we have looked at some third party STL solutions they have been difficult to bring up. We might still go with one of them if we find time to get them working but in the meantime we have been hoping that the Android NDK will eventually include native STL support.

Dreamcast as in my favorite gaming console of ALL time?
Please, PLEASE do it. I'll be the first in line!

I want VMU support too A Caster mini-game would be SIIICK.

Android doesn't support STL? That's bizarre.

No promises, but the Caster codebase is fairly portable and target hardware pretty modest. Thus it has been a really been a really fun exercise to see how many platforms we can bring it up on

Not directly, no. Keep in mind that Android, while it's Linux at it's heart is a sort-of JavaME, coupled with it and there's bits and bobs not tied fully in. I'm working on trying to make one happen along with the Pandora and other Linux ARM ports- but I've been kind of snowed under with a tough release at work, coupled with trying to get Chapter 2 out for Linux X86.

Just in case you hadn't noticed, the recently release Android NDK Revision 5 "provides a default C++ STL implementation (based on STLport) as a helper module." It doesn't support exceptions or RTTI but maybe it contains all that you needed anyway.

Heh, actually, I just recently removed all dependencies on STL by switching over to my own templates.

Yeah, we've gotten pretty far with the Android port.

I'm currently debating on doing the port vs. doing some new game play with Caster vs. doing a brand new game vs. working on some new animation software... Seems to change every day... but I've been leaning towards finishing up the Android port of late.

Thanks!

In other news, doesn't Gingerbread offer STL? I think I read somewhere that It was intended to... Or maybe that was 2.4, idk. Its too late for me to verify these facts with sources.

How did you know about the Dreamcast port? I wasn't sure we made that public.

Spencer was looking into it a while back and made some pretty good progress.

However, he is now indie full time (after 5 good years at Apple) so he's more busy doing things that will eventually provide him an income for his family... which is a down side of going indie full time. You can't really do whatever you want since you still need to pay the bills.

Ah, you didn't mention it but someone above in this thread did

Well, cool to hear that the dreamcast is still relevant. I know a few other companies are releasing stuff for it. I'll never give mine up.

If there ever comes a test phase, let me know. I'd be all over that.

Hey Darlizzle,

We still have it and have done a little work recently. However, the fragmentation of the android market and the poor support for multi-touch on many devices made me decide to hold off.

I don't want to release a game that someone will play and then complain about crappy controls because the touch input stinks.

However, we are looking at the Xperia Play since IT HAS BUTTONS! WOOT!

And with that there is an opportunity to bring Caster to the PS Vita. So that's the main thing I'm thinking about right now.

But I have lots of other projects in the works so I'm not sure what will happen next.

Glad you like Caster!

That's quite of a shame to hear. Isn't there a way to release it only for certain Android devices which are sure to have good multitouch screen for this game? I understand if cutting out user base by phone model does not sound that great and maybe you had a bit more broader market in mind when you started porting =/
