Feelings coming from a huge Portal fan

So I haven't beaten the game yet but I am 5 hours in and I must say I love it. I notice a lot of similarities between QC and Portal, which makes sense as it was made by some of the original devs. For instance the buttons, doors, and the disembodied voice talking to you and sometimes making fun of you. But this isn't why I love this game, I love it cause it has way more timing and faster paced puzzles. Portal 1 had many of these, Portal 2 really didn't. I also like in Portal 1 the game doesn't really point you in any direction as to how to solve things unlike Portal 2 which you can easily tell by the color wall panels. All in all if the talent in QC worked on Portal 2 it would have been a much more enjoyable game. And QC has been definitely worth the $15 I paid for it.

While QC is a completely different game, it feels like a better sequel to Portal than Portal2. Portal2 lost nearly all the magic that made Portal so successful. Portal2 will likely generate more money for Valve, but IMHO, it not nearly as good, and I enjoy QC a lot more.

IMHO, where I feel Airtight went wrong with QC is that they didn't allow for casual gamers to move forward when their fast-twitch skills are not good enough, and never will be good enough, to complete some of the more difficult puzzles. So for a lot of Portal fans who liked Portal because they could find slow\easy solutions, they won't find easy\slow solutions for some of QC's puzzles, and for those gamers they will be forced to quit the QC before they are half way finished. Hell, even a "Skip this level" button would have been better than leaving some gamers hanging with no option other than quiting, but ideally there would be an alternate easy solution for every puzzle, but that solution takes a much longer time, thus encouraging the gamer to try faster, but more difficult, solutions; that is what Portal did.

I respect your opinion.

Portal 2 is a REALLY GREAT game.
Story, characters, sound, coop, workshop, etc.
Everything is great.

No it isn't. The levels are much too linear and the annoyance orb blabbers all the time. And even GLaDOS is completely out of character.
The game really get's a trun for the better as soon as you enter old Aperture. But as soon as you leave it it's back to pure crap. Put a stick in it and stirr.

Technically speaking the Portal 2 is well made, no doubt about it. However, I have had far more fun playing fan maps than the actual game. If I were to rank Portal 2 maps\mods, the main game wouldn't make my top 25. The main game is fun, so I am not suggesting it is bad, just no where near as good\fun\challenging as Portal.

I do give Valve a lot credit for the mapping tools they added to Portal 2 that allows others to make some pretty damn cool maps.

there was no possible way to make portal 2 a unique experience again. When i played QC (and i really liked it) i understood why valve left the portaling and glados idea initially. They wanted to let the player discover an other world. Instead the fans demanded portal2 with portals and glados, what is an already familiar environment to them.

Still valve did a really good job on portal 2.

I haven't finished QC yet, and frankly, I don't really have any desire to do so. Calling it a Portal-wannabe is harsh, but still, the overall experience feels like it's trying way too hard to be Portal without actually being Portal. The linear series of physics- and timing-based puzzles, the cumulative puzzle-solving mechanics, the snarky disembodied observer -- Portal did it all first, and did it all better, IMO. QC's dimensional play is clever, but its game world context is simply uninteresting, at least judging from what I've seen so far. Portal proved that great puzzle mechanics and great story can work very well together. QC, though, leaves me totally not caring about the nephew, the not-very-funny uncle, the manor, etc. There's not much motivation to solve a puzzle except for, well, solving it and moving on to the next. In a game like this, that's disappointingly bland to me. Maybe things get more interesting later on, but like I said, I don't really have any desire to keep going.
