Saints Row 2 stuck at "Loading 5%"

Okay, I'm at my wit's end here. I have literally tried every conceivable thing to make this work, including:

•Running as admin
•disabling crossfire
•completely disabling the second GPU
•turning off Windows aero
•running in every conceivable compatibility mode
•re-running the DXSetup
•deleting settings.dat
•running windowed
•using the "defaults" command line
•verifying the integrity
•defragmenting via steam
•defragmenting the whole computer
•virus/malware scans
•disabling all the extras on my keyboard
•unplugging everything non-essential
•reinstalling from a backup
•reinstalling from a clean re-download

There is literally nothing else I can think of. I'll list my PC specs and if anyone at all has any help I swear you will be my hero.

Crossfired Radeon HD 5770s
AMD Phenom II X6 1090T
Windows 7 Professional 64-bit
Logitech G110 keyboard (has caused issues with a game before, so I figured its relevant)

Drivers are the most current I could find (earlyish 2011), and I have 8GB of RAM.

Getting stuck or crashing at loading % usually indicates a problem with loading either common.vpp_pc or patch.vpp_pc, but could also be related to hardware. The most likely culprit is the keyboard and the installed devices associated with programmable keys that SR2 is mistakenly identifying as a game controller.

Since you were a little vague, you may have already done some of these steps, but here are a few things to try:

* Read through the FAQ and try every troubleshooting step related to crashing:
http://forums.steampowered.com/forum....php?t=1715922

Some things you didn't mention explicitly that might be worth trying:

* Disable your second monitor if you have one

* Disable all HID-Compliant Game Controllers in Device Manager, and/or try to use a basic usb keyboard instead if you have one lying around to test.

* Disable audio enhancements in your speaker properties and run 2.0 sound instead of 5.1

* Install the latest Direct X libraries directly from Microsoft rather than the ones included with the game:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en

The only other thing I can think of is that SR2 is somehow getting confused with the other monitor port on your 5770. Maybe try either plugging your monitor into the other port, or running with the following startup parameter to force the game to display on what it think is the 2nd monitor:
2ndmon

Sounds like my problem. I just got word from THQ about something else to try.

On 4/10/2011 you posed a question to THQ which was noted as inquiry 148775.

The question you posed and our response are listed below.

Your Question, Comment or Feedback:
I'm trying to start Saints Row 2, but it crashes when
it reaches the copyright page or immediately
afterward. It has never reached the main menu. I
have the fully updated Steam version of Saints Row 2.

Response :

Thank you, (censored for privacy's sake), for contacting THQ Customer Support.

Can you try running the system in Clean Boot?

a. Log on to the computer by using an account that has administrator rights.

b. Click Start, type msconfig.exe in the Start Search box, and then press ENTER to start the System Configuration Utility.

If you are prompted for an administrator password or for confirmation, type your password, or click Continue.

c. On the General tab, click Selective Startup, and then click to clear the Load startup items check box. (The Use Original Boot.ini check box is unavailable.)

d. On the Services tab, click to select the Hide all Microsoft services check box, and then click Disable all.

Note Following this step lets Microsoft services continue to run. These services include Networking, Plug and Play, Event Logging, Error Reporting, and other services. If you disable these services, you may permanently delete all restore points. Do not do this if you want to use the System Restore utility together with existing restore points.

e. Click OK, and then click Restart.

This sounds risky. What do you think?

None of the troubleshooting steps I mentioned helped, eh?

I wouldn't say it's risky, but you would definitely need to thoroughly document and/or screenshot all your services and what their current state is (Automatic, Manual, or Disabled) so that you can restore them back after you're done testing.

I suppose that it's worth a shot. There might be some software or service loading for a device that's causing SR2 to mistakenly identify something as a controller.

I get exactly the same issue, in fact I get it with Just Cause 2 as well. FYI the game does not crash, the loading screen is fine and the animated loading things e.g. the flashing numerator keep playing, but it never progresses past 5% loading.

It has nothing to do with the age of the computer, I have a modern up to date one. Still trying to figure this out, annoying as it is stopping me playing 2 games.

It's odd though as my specs are the complete opposite of the ops. I.e. Intel CPU and Nvidia graphics. Only thing similar is that we both use Win 7 64-bit and have something logitech branded. hmmm....

Fixed my issue. Used steammover and moved my game folder to a smaller hard drive and it worked perfectly

I just installed Saints Row 2 for the first time and it got stuck at "Loading 5%", just like the topic starter had. While I was searching for a solution and found this thread the game finally started on itself, I think it took about 5 minutes loading time in total. Still not normal since I have a high capacity computer but now I know I just need a little patience with this game.
