Exclamation CS:S Windows 7 issues - general discussion

(Since I'm not native English speaker some of terms I'm using may not be apropriate, if there are any, please correct me)

My PC specs:
Windows 7 32bit
CPU: AMD Athlon 64 3700+
GPU: GeForce 9800GT 512MB
HDD: WD 320GB
Monitor: HP w2207 (22" widescreen)

I realized that some people here, including me, are encountering problems with running CS:S on Windows 7. Purpose of creating this thread is to collect all of them and try to solve them collectievly.

Here are the most common issues people encounter. If there are any other non mentioned below, please write them in your replies and I'll add them to the first post.

1. Screen resolution and scaling (widescreen monitors mostly).

#Problem: When choosing resolution smaller than the monitor native resolution CS:S appears as a box in the center of the screen with black borders around.

#Solution (for nVidia cards users, worked for me): go to nVidia Control Panel -> Display -> Adjust desktop size and position -> Choose: Use nVidia scaling with fixed aspect ratio

Worked for me. After that I can pick any resolution I want, a the game box does not get smaller after picking res like for example 1024x768

2. CS:S blackout after starting the game

#Problem: Some people got black screen after starting the game, it may be some issue with resolutions, but no full solution yet.

3. CS:S FPS drops

#Problems: Here's how it looks like in my case. Game runs smoothly on full detail, with everything turned on, resolution 1650x1080 but every few seconds I've got sudden FPS drop. Moreover things like barrels, granades act weird. The move laggy and slowly. At first i thought It's CPU causing problem with physics somehow, but when looking at falling bodies I don't have any problems.

#Solution: Solution below makes game run a bit better but does not solve the problem fully:

Problem solved: Adaptive Anti-Aliasing was on. Turning it off lets me look into bushes all day.
Full solution for this problem is something many people are looking forward to because it makes you unable to play this game normally.

#1 is a driver "issue" if anything. XP computers could be set up the same way. It is, as you stated, a driver option, not even a problem.

#3 is also an option in the ATI driver options, and it may reduce or increase performance depending on the game. It wouldn't surprise me that it wouldn't work well in CSS, a game rather old at this point.

Maybe people just haven't reformatted in a long time.

The 3700+ is really bottlenecking that 9800GT.

My cs:s crashes sometimes with windows 7, I've mostly avoided this by running it in compatibility mode with windows vista sp1. But then I encounter more problems.

Just made the same switch last week. Havn't encountered any troubles yet apart from forgetting to download the 64bit drivers for my mouse. It only took me 3 days to realise the drivers didn't do anything haha!

CS:S seems to run just fine, maybe a tiny FPS drop but mine is still consistantly over 100 so no worries. Only other game I have tried is Stalker which also runs fine with an FPS boost! Oh and Audiosurf is fine too.
