Chinese hat farmers?

A joke post in a topic below made me think about this.

Will we get chinese hat farmers? Since the demand for hat is extremely high, they could probably sell some.

And farming hats is much easiers than MMOs. They can simply host their own idle servers with 2000 different steam accounts. No need for employees either.

Profits would be massive if a smart visionary Chinese man bought all the TF2 copies during the 2.50$ deal. They may even be farming as we speak.

THE HORROR.

Sure, I would be surprised if nobody in China bought a whole boat load of TF2 accounts [along with VAC banned accounts] to idle for hats and hope to make a buck in the future.

I lived in China for a year, they're crafty people.

chinese are smart, they know valve will never release that trade system, so what's the point.

on the otherhand, they know WoW players will spend 500 dollars of their mommies money for epic purplez

yeah but WoW gold farmers require to hire ... farmers.. and pay monthly fees for the accounts.

TF2 farmers ... well, it can be one guy with a few powerful rigs and clever VMWare setup for multiple accounts.

We won't because hats are random chance drops. You can't just go out and kill huntsman snipers in the forest for 12 hours and expect to have something.
Unless the chinese cashed in on the 2.50 tf2 thing it wouldn't be cost efficient to run a lot of accounts...
oh my god, that's why valve did it...

... at first, I thought nobody was stupid enough to pay for a bit of pixels that does nothing in a game, but then I saw some of the replies about Bill's hat about people buying THE HAT and not carring about THE GAME...

It is really probable that some chinese or korean guy is already doing this to make quick cash...

the pubs will be like: "Buy TF2 *RARE* hat *TODAY* for only 5 dollar a pair!"

Never forget that there are people out there with a lot of money who would be willing to buy hats rather than spend their own time idling. There are some people who have a lot more money than time and they are willing to spend their money on frivolous crap. Because to them, $50 for a TF2 hat is nothing. They spend more than that on lunch every day.

There is definitely a market for TF2 hat farming and someone is going to make a lot of money doing it once the trade system is up and running.

Funny thing, there was a thread with the exact same name before.

And like I said there, I think the odds of this ever happening are extremely low: http://forums.steampowered.com/forum...d.php?t=978658

TF2 just doesn't give a worthwhile market with its entirely random system, and with the low expected number of customers... really not a bargain.

I actuall bought the game off ebay for 35 bucks from someone who got the 4 pack. I did the same number calculation as you and decided the extra dollar or so was worth it, as I would have to pay 45 bucks if I just bought for myself.

I occasionally visit an idle server; partly because the map it runs sends everyone through a sort of conveyor belt, and it's fun to practice my aim with projectile weapons on them. A couple days ago someone who was also wandering around on it mentioned the number of hats on his 'main' account and his 'idle' account.

I asked him "You have an account just for idling?"

He said yes, and told me that he was actually rather low key in that respect. Apparently, he once met a guy that had ten accounts for item/hat farming.

Sweet Jesus. Even that other guy thought it was overboard.
