AB1: Ridiculously frequent explosions
Playing through AB1 and the gameplay is ok, but man, what the heck is up with the scripted explosions every 1/2 second? Seems like every 5 feet you walk there's an explosion. They don't create tension because they're so ridiculously overdone. It's like something I'd expected to see in a parody game, not something in "serious" title. The non-stop booming in my ears and screen flashes are driving me nuts.
What kind of crazy person designs a level and thinks to himself "hmm, I have 500 scripted explosions this level. Yup, that's about the right amount." Forget how good or bad the rest of the game is, this alone is enough to make me stop playing. Are the other 2 episodes just as bad in this respect? |

Hm I know what you mean, there were a lot of explosions, but it was ok for me, I liked both games so far. Don't think that AB2 has more explosions, but you could try the demo

I bought the games as a pack on sale a while back, too late to avoid the others :\
In any case the explosions thin out near the end of the game when you're on the other ship. It really is ridiculous for most of the game though. I rushed through AB1 and started AB2 and that retains the better pacing so it's livable, but still it's kind of silly how random things explode as you walk by them. |

Complaining about explosions in a sci-fi shooter is like complaining about swords in a fantasy RPG. They're part of the genre's idiom, you know? Even if the game contains more explosions, fires, and arcing electrical equipment per square meter than any other game I've ever seen, they're basically just noisy scenery.
I'd be content if the explosions would just stop sealing doors and forcing me to backtrack to restore power/put out fires/vent poison gas/whatever. |

Oh BTW, I like how the camera in Alien Breed keeps shaking every few seconds and in some areas, non-stop. It is SOOOOO cinematic when I am getting a headache in a stupid top-down shooter, something which even games like Quake 3 didn't manage to accomplish. I don't remember constant camera shake/explosions in games like Shadowgrounds/Alien Shooter and those games were pretty damn fun as well (also, with more content). Maybe T17 should stick to making Worms games. Last edited by NikSha: 06-28-2012 at 03:35 PM. |
