Spy is a bit difficult in the early waves, but I've pretty much won all missions in mann up with spy (played with a group though), and it worked pretty well. I killed huge groups of people once I got sapper upgrades, and managed to deal about 50% of the damage my team did to giants, sometimes soloing some of them. Spy is useful indeed.

SO i gave it another shot... and i still fail to see this badassery that everyone keeps talking about.
The only things I manage to kill are normal bots, and most of the time the team kills them before I can get to them anyway. I did what pple suggested, maxed sapper, max armor penetration and attack speed and I still can't bring a giant down from full hp, EVERYTIME I try to backstab one they turn around and kill me. The most I can get in are 2-3 backstabs and they still turn around too damn fast and I get a crocket or rapid fired grenade to the face for my efforts. So please, am I missing something or is there something I'm doing wrong? At least as a sniper I can do similarly high hp headshots on the stupid giants without risk of them turning around and owning me I think I need to re-evaluate my position on the usefulness of the classes. Ps. Oh yeah and I still maintain that the sapper downtime is rubbish. If you backstab one of the buggers without sapping its buddies the rest will quickly turn around and kill you, so you're virtually useless during recharge. PPs. The only time I find spy useful is when there are large numbers of high hp normals like those stupid steel gauntlets that have like 10000 hp and are dmg resistant or when there are medics healing the giants otherwise you're mostly doing jack♥♥♥♥ PPPs. Does anyone have this problem where another teammate (usually a scout) keeps running behind the bots, making them turn around and toast you? Yeah, that too, is another reason why it sucks being a spy. Last edited by nutto666: 08-23-2012 at 09:16 PM. |

I played Mann Up as Scout with a Spy on the team, and I can't tell you how many times our Spy saved my behind.
I'd go back to pick the Snipers and a wave of Heavies comes off the cliff. I realize I wasn't paying attention and brace to be shredded, but the Spy comes out of nowhere and saps them all. I join in the fun and Mad Milk them then Spy, Pyro, and I enjoy free health. I'm heckling the Giant Charged Soldier when I see our Spy decloak behind it. I get up-close and Mad Milk it to force its attention to me while the Spy noms about half its health. Then we both make a retreat to set-up and do it all over again. Bowmen. ♥Bowmen. ♥A giant wave of those bastards pincushions our Heavy, forces our Engineer into retreat, and overwhelms our actually pretty competent Pyro and Soldier. ♥Spy saps the abominations, I Mad Milk them, everyone takes scared pot-shots until they're at full health while we backstab and meatshot to our heart's content. ♥Then we dive into obscurity until we can do it again. Seriously, Spy/Scout is obscene in MvM. Especially when the heavy-hitters are paying enough attention to utilize the incredible openings we give them. |

"Seriously, Spy/Scout is obscene in MvM."
I'm a spy man myself and find them very useful, never though of how well a scout and spy could work together though. Scouts only tend to get me killed by drawing pyro attention to me, and getting himself killed at the same time, leaving cash uncollected. Though this does sound promising what you have described. Always good to get more perspective and information on these unexpected good combos. Spy/scout ftw |

It's necessary to decide which flank you will take when scout and spy team up.

I should slap people who call Snipers useless in MvM.Seriously dont underestimate a Huntsman Sniper who knows what he is doing.
I can slow giants easy while marking them for minicrits(with a good solid team they go down in seconds if not less sometimes),at the same time i can slow entire groups of anything i want to be mowed down, and its WONDERFUL alongside a spy or a scout. Mad Milk is just amazing in MVM or the spy's sapping. With the Huntsman i can easily take out entire mobs on slopes, do 500 to over 600 dmg to giants(multiple giants when they line up which is often), lay some bleed down, and kill lines of would be bomb carriers(as they line up behind each other). So on and so forth. People just don't use them properly that is all.As a sniper you are a dps/support. Don't ever use a smg.Simply be where your teammates are with the huntsman and a bit back.Call out spy when you can and your mates will help you.Though you should have no problem easily pinning that spy against the wall.I rage so much at snipers bringing in smgs, i have not once seen it useful and jarate is too dam important. As for spy i just recently wanted to finally start using one because of this mode.I am actually here to ask for advice.Sorry about the rant. Atm i got mostly default items cept for the ambassador and YER.Should i craft a spycicle? Or should i trade for some other spy items? Think of me as a spy newbie. |

Just finished a game of CPU Slaughter in mann up mode. We were on the wave where there is a tank, a bunch of heavies and medics, and jarate snipers. My team focused on the tank while I dealt with the medics and heavies. The bots cluster together just enough that a single fully upgraded sapper can stop most of them.
My team destroyed the tank and hung back as spawn waiting for the heavy rush, because they didn't think a spy could hold them all off. Got all the heavies and medics, and a few snipers as well. We then went on to finish the match. Spy with a fully upgraded sapper is great at stopping a bunch of bots at once, and then clearing them out. Especially against giants with uber medics. Sap if there are multiple medics, then stab the group. Dead ringer, redisguise and go back in for more. |
