THIS IS NOT RECOMMENDED FOR EVERYONE, AS ON SOME SYSTEMS IT CAN DESTABILIZE THINGS.
  • Launch CS:S. Wait for it to fully load.
  • hit ctrl+alt+del.
  • In the taskmanager window, hit the processes tab.
  • Find Steam.
  • Select it, right click it-> set priority-> below normal.
  • Close the Taskmanager, alt+tab back into game.
[/color]

If u want more fps = better performance, why would you set priority to below normal. Doesnt priority mean importance. Since css should have better performance, shouldn't we set priority to aboveNormal or high ??

Plz explain, obviously i don't get it.

css is hl2.exe in the task manager, and if you set steam priority to below normal, it will just use less resources

Technically, not really. Unless the default skin is let's say 1mb and you're using a high res skin that's 3mb, you won't notice it unless your RAM is so bogged down that EVERYTHING slows down.

One or two skins here or there won't make a difference, an entire map of high res textures might though. Especially if you've got under 1gb of RAM.

CSS is definitely not made for laptops unfortunately... even using overclocking. And even setting everything to "low", or by adding Casey's autoexec, you would probably not increase fps. But it could've been worth trying.

Hi Yoda.
Well, if you think that Casey's autoexec increases choke, i don't know what to say. The only commands which could cause that are the Netcode commands. You should set them to default values as follows:

cl_cmdrate "30" // Set it as you wish (like 50, 60 or 100), but higher values means higher ping on low connections...
cl_updaterate "20" // Idem. Some servers set it to 60 or 100, along with the cmd_rate, when you join.
rate "10000" // Higher values can cause higher ping. Some servers set the value to 20000, 25000 or 30000 when you join.
cl_interp "0.1" // Set it as you wish, anyway it is set automatically depending on other values when loading a game. (cf. note at the end)
cl_interpolate "1" // Default is 1.
cl_lagcomp_errorcheck "0" // Default is 0.
cl_lagcompensation "1" // Default is 1.
cl_smooth "1" // Default is 1.

You should also remove those commands:
cl_restrict_server_commands // unknown command
cl_phys_props_enable // cheat var
r_modellodscale // cheat var
r_propsmaxdist // cheat var
r_drawdetailprops // cheat var
mat_mipmaptextures // cheat var

And change these:
r_decal_cullsize "9999" // I tried "9999" and had pbs too. Try 1 for comfort, 5 for performance.
r_shadowrendertotexture // Set it to 0 for low quality shadows.
mat_clipz // Set it to 1.
mat_compressedtextures // Set it to 1.

Along with that, you should try to add the netcode var: cl_interp_ratio.
It has an influence on ping and on how the game deals with pbs linked to a high ping.
It is set to 2 by default, but you can set it to 1 for a try.
NOTE: cl_interp = cl_interp_ratio / cl_updaterate

++

And, to answer to some other posts: this config does NOT deactivate in-game chat, or radars. lol. Really not, I swear. But it does deactivate flashlights. To reactivate them, just change the line with the r_shadows command. Set it to 1. But beware, because if you deactivate ragdolls, but have shadows on, you will see strange things
To view flashlights but no shadow, set r_shadows to "1" and r_shadowmaxrendered to "0" (thx kyster)
And, finally, to reset all these commands (like if you hate this autoexec but don't want to spend your time setting every value manually from 0 to 1 and vice-versa), just type "-autoconfig" without the quotes, in the options menu of CSS (STEAM GAMES > CSS > right click > PROPERTIES > Set launch options > type: -autoconfig). (and remove the autoexec ) You can also remove your config.cfg.
Bye all

Hi everyone, I have 'good news', at least for some laptop users..
As I am far away from home now, and using my girlfriend's laptop, I can confirm that this cfg is reaaally cool.
It improved my fps from 20 up to 50 on this laptop!
I must confess that the computer seems to be quite good (see end of message for hardware details).
Anyway, I just removed some useless programs from startup menu (via the msconfig) and added the autoexec I posted (p. 22, but you can use the one posted by Ouchtronx on page 1), before I started the game, and here it was! 50 fps on a laptop
It nearly works better than cs 1.6 (which, I can't understand why, seems to be blocked at 60 fps unless I play in windowed mode...)
Hardware:
It's a Compaq Presario CQ40, with an integrated video card that I supposed to be shabby, but not!
-> Intel(R) Graphics Media Accelerator Driver for Mobile (well, of course, forget about antialiasing...)
CPU: Intel(R) Pentium(R) Dual CPU T3400 @ 2.16GHz
3Gb of Ram (omg, it's more than on my pc)
Thx again for having created this thread and tutorial
Bye all!

Please read the 1st page of this thread.
Or visit:
http://whisper.ausgamers.com/wiki/in...p/Fps_problems
(Browse the page to find the -dxlevel and -heapsize paragraphs..)

My opinion: don't type anything for your dxlevel if you don't have any fps problem.
And do not exceed -heapsize 1048576.
Bye.
