Starting Gmod Linux Server! Need Help!

Let me start off by saying I am generally a PC user when it comes to servers, so I hardly know anything about starting a server on linux. I am using Umbuntu.

The only reason I am actually starting a server on Linux is because, well, my stupid Vista refused to work for me when starting a server on PC.

My questions are quite simple... I have downloaded all the content, and my server is supposedly started through terminal. I get the text

"Starting up Garry's Mod 10 server.
Started. Type screen -x to resume!"

My questions:
1: When I type screen -x I get the text "There is no screen to be attached." What does this mean/how can it be fixed?
2: How can I connect to my server? Do I need to port forward like has to be done on PC? Which IP would I be connecting to/Where would I get the Ip to Connect to.

Thanks for the help in advance :\

It means the server has not been started, probably there was an error. Try starting the server without screen to check. Go to the orangebox folder where I'm assuming gmod is located at, then type something like

./srcds_run -game garrysmod -port 27015 +map gm_construct

See if you can pick up any error messages at the end.

Yes the port (in the example 27015) needs to be forwarded if you use a router. I don't know the commands to get the IP, but if neither localhost nor www.whatismyip.com works, I found that using netstat -n displays the local IP for active connections.

Thank you so much, I got it working now.
Just a quick question, I don't know if you will know anything about this but when I join my game, everything seems to be in a "Fast forward" mode.

For example I can shoot an entire clip of shotgun in a second or two. Clearly this is not right. Is is something with my server.cfg or is it a variable I have to change in the server?
