Have the headcrabs ever zombified anything other than humans or Combine?

Because they had to survive somehow. Perhaps they zombified vortigaunts before the Resonance Cascade or some other creature we never saw?

I highly doubt that humans are their only prey.

They seem to do pretty fine with birds and they probably all hung out with Momma Gonarch for nurishment.

Humans probably aren't their only prey, however, we don't know that zombifying is natural for Headcrabs. Whatever they normally do to their prey could just be affecting Humans in an unconventional way Otherwise it would make since for them to zombify Vorts, since they're the only ones with a sufficient head size. However, Vortiguants don't seem stupid enough to get caught like that. I'd expect that they have some sort of other food source. But it's really hard to say what their normal survival method is since it could very well be completely different from anything on Earth. We don't know how it survived on Xen or where it lived before that.

There's certainly no doubt they fed off the craniums of other species. We simply haven't met any of them, yet.

Perhaps headcrabs are smarter than we think. They may zombify humans and combine to kill prey larger than they are, then feed off of the reward.

Headcrabs not only zombiefy you, they also transform the inner organs to another headcrab. Thats the second form of reproduction we know. In order to this it seems possible that headcrabs infest bullsquids or other forms of life, not to control them but to produce more headcrabs. And maybe the ability to control the human body is a side effect, not seen before.

The Gonarch is the Headcrab's only source of reproduction.

But if we killed the Gonarch in HL1, where are all the new headcrabs coming from? (I suppose there could be more gonarchs.) Granted, the ones we see in HL2 may not be "new", but there seem to be more in HL2 than in HL1...

I think they are a natural parasite of the Combine homeworld... there they would have plenty of different intelligent species to evolve such behavior. Not to mention the Advisors themselves are also bloated, brain loving, other-species-using sobs.

The Combine are indeed producing them. Artificial Gonarch Sac, to be exact.
