Maximum accepteable filesize?

God, im creating too many threads.

But its a simple question; when is my map's filesize too big for the average user to bother downloading it? 10MB? 20? 150?

Thanks, evo

I think there's an engine limit of either 20Mb or 25Mb or something like that... can't remember exactly.

Edit: Guess not then Not sure where I heard about said incorrect limit... going to be wracking my brains about that for a while now trying to remember.

The DOD:S map dod_kolsch is ~200mb, IIRC. I don't believe HL2 has a filesize limit, so your file can be as large as you want it to be. The only limitations you may want to set are how long it takes for somebody to download it.

Average tf2 map (bsp) is 20 mb, but there are many up to 50mb. Largest custom map I have is 120mb. I dont think theres a limit but do you really wanna compile that long and make people download that.

Large map files are usually do to not enough optimization or the map has custom effects.

Please read the question again folks

Mine's 10mb atm, prob will increase up to 15 when finished. Is that ok? or will people quit due to long downloadtimes?

There is no BSP file size limit. There is only engine limits like No. of modles, bushes, entites, lights, I/O ect ect.

Yet again, im not talking about any max limit. I only want to know the average filesize and how small it has to be for the majority of players to download it in-game.

People will download the map regardless of the size if the map is good. However by default if you dont use an URL download for your server when you host player will not be able to download if the file size is above 50mb (might be 75mb now). To change this when running a game (server or listen) in the console type net_max_filesize <Value in MB>
