Failed to contact key server

I downloaded the whole game through Steam a couple of hours ago. Once the download finished I tried to launch the game and it gave me this following error message: "Failed to contact key server". I then read someone saying the game might need to be run in my region's main language, so in proprieties I changed it to french.

The game suddenly starts to update itself and download a couple more gbs. It doesn't give me any information on what it's now downloading but I let it finish anyway. Once done I tried to launch the game again and got the same error message. So I switch back to english, and I get yet ANOTHER download!

What's up? The game folder in SteamApps is now up to 13gb, despite the game only requiring 8.5gb in the official system requirements. It surely doesn't seem like files are missing. But at a quick glance I don't seem to find any duplicates. So what's causing the game to not work? Is the server down for this long? Really that would suck, I'm trying to play a single player game here! And what's causing me to redownload different languages every time I switch? I thought it all came in one package?

Anyone care to help me please?

I had the same problem, but it's fixed now. Try starting the adventure editor, shut it down and retry starting the game. That worked for me

I think the key server was just down for a while. Without doing anything, it works now!

This problem occurs when steam has a sale and runs out of keys. Steam unethically continues to take people's money when they do not have the product they are selling. I encountered this problem last week when I purchased the DLC packs for the game borderlands. I have owned borderlands for months and decided it was time to pick up the DLC during the sale. After paying, I tried to play my borderlands game. Every time I tried I received the error "failed to contact key server". Purchasing the expansion packs had locked me out of the game entirely. No main game, No DLC. I submitted support requests with no response. Finally after 48 hours steam acquired more keys and they game worked again. I am still waiting for a response from steam because this 'key server' problem happens every time they run a sale on a product that includes the "SecureROM" DRM software.

If you don't know what DRM is, it is a software technology that blocks legitimate paying customers from using the products that they spent their hard earned money for. Pirates and Thieves bypass this technology in seconds.

Just a note: Steam is DRM as well. Because Steam wasn't able to deliver a key and Steam was preventing from playing the game is no reason to blame SecuROM
