Unable to join group chat rooms/ message anyone

Ever since the last steam update steam has been more steamy than usual, I cant even message anyone or join chat rooms anymore.

I'm having exactly the same problem - can't send messages, can't click enter chat rooms unless someone invites me. Been going on since the update before the L4D2 release. Can't seem to find any information anywhere on how to fix this problem.
