The G-Man is Shiva

The destroyer. Anyway, this thought came to mind when I considered the saga's emphasis on the symbol: λ and exponential decay.

Maybe somewhere in the back of Laidlaw's mind, probably when attempting to understand the G-Man for himself around half way through HL2, he is or was considering the G-Man to be some sort of entity of chaos and destruction... and, if on the good side, revolution.

Behind all of the G-Man's motives is a desire to bring about the end of the Universe: the death of the Universe scenario where all energy and space is unraveled. I guess you could think of him as a being made of "dark energy" (the unknown force driving space tearing/expansion), which would explain a lot of his "powers" etc.

This would fall in line with Breen's suggestion that all you do is destroy rather than create. This would also grant Gordon's emblazoned "λ" on the middle of his chest some great deal of significance. He sees Gordon as a havoc wreaking unit of chaos, and despises the Combine who are trying to bring order. He's willing to deal with anybody, including Breen or the Nihilanth, for any great deal of disorder.

In fact, I'm very certain of this, now.

I guess λ also denotes "failure rate" in reliability theory:

"Failure rate is the frequency with which an engineered system or component fails, expressed for example in failures per hour. It is often denoted by the Greek letter λ (lambda) and is important in reliability engineering."

Ok, assuming I'm on to something, the interest in Hindu philosophy also seems to bridge a gap between the LOST series (Dharma initiative) and Half life since they hint at being entertained by eachother's material.

It's a nice theory, and a lot better than the generic 'LOL Gman is GROdoN Freemant LOL!' theories. I don't exactly believe it, but it's believable.

Don't really like the whole idea of the G-Man bringing about total cosmic apocalypse.

Helps quantify Gordon's "services", G-Man's "offers" and "own damned reasons", and the saga's emphasis on the lambda symbol. I think they are making more Hindu references then just Shiva as well, such as the vortigaunts referring to a Universal oneness such as Brahman. "Return to the all in one". The righteousness of death and nothingness in Buddhism is also pervading the saga. Father Gregori is seen zealously killing off those people locked into a state of suffering as a zombie, and we see that while the Combine grant humanity with "Immortality" it really just means being enslaved in an unnatural state of suffering, such as the "stalkers". The Nihilanth, similarly, seemingly once worshiped as an alien god, full of meaning, by the votigaunts, is known as the "Nihilanth" lacking meaning in his state of slavery. Gordon is being called the "opener of the way" which is similar to the rebirthing process of achieving Nirvana, which the vortigaunts also believe is a temporary transition into darkness.

Yeah, eastern philosophy got really popular in America around the creation of half life when the internet really became active with forum debates, so it's not surprising that this would background the game, if it, in fact, does in some way or another.

So the G-Man takes on a deathly demeanor, like a death dealer or grim reaper, having ultimate reasons of flat lining everything orderly.

What was the primary purpose of my reading that? Was there something in there about Hindu philosophy?

Take the Death card in tarot. It doesn't necessarily mean literal death--it may just mean the end (death) of something, which means or allows for the beginning (birth) of something else.

Right, and we might also consider Valve's home-base is in Seattle, depression central, where a grunge band by the name of "Nirvana" pretty much sprang. Coincidence? Come to think of it, does the Episode 2 suicide scene make a reference to Cobain? Coincidence, I ask?

They also enjoy employing "rusty" textures, as their own artist claims is his specialty...

there seems to be a sort of solopsistic state of self-expression that most artists get into, and I don't think Valve is immune to it.
