Thumbs up "Silent Running" feature video

Just posted on FuturemarkTV, our YouTube channel:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p4tpUcpycqY&hd=1

This feature video shows Shattered Horizon's "silent running" mode. No sound in space seems like a cool idea at first, but it’s actually very hard to play an FPS without any audio cues. Our solution was to give the player's space suit "audio simulation". The idea is that your suit recreates a soundscape based on sensor information of the surrounding environment. "Silent running" is a game feature that lets you power down your suit and disable the audio simulation to gain a stealth advantage while sacrificing radar, HUD and maneuverability.

Dude, you have no idea how much I love this mode. It's so damn nice. Floating through space, taking in the visuals, waiting in some decrepit asteroid waiting for an enemy to reveal himself...so good.

I accidentally killed a friendly who was hiding in a deep shadow.

Haha, I did that too, except he was not really in the shadow at all... It was my first game though and had barely played so was still getting used to telling the differences between teams and some dude who was not like my normal friendlies I thought must be an enemy.

It sucks when you are MMC (yellow) and a friendly got EMP'd. They look like enemy from far away...

GOD I HATE THAT!

Those are the reason for all my teamkills

That's why I started playing as the blue guys lately.

Sounds like a good reason to have yellow team EMP'd players have yellow particles to indicate their being EMP'd.

The audio simulation trick is a brilliant way to justify the Space Is Noisy trope. Plus, it makes the silent running mode all the more impactful, when you switch off your suit for the first time and hear nothing but muffled breathing and gunfire... very cool effect.

I rather enjoy the fact that you can't tell really. You have to spend the extra half second to really check the suit. I think it adds a bit of realism.

I also <3 this mode - I spent about 10 minutes flying around silent on the training server listening to Blue Danube Waltz
