Trojans Being Transmitted Over IWNET

I know this has already been posted. However I felt as if the thread title wasn't as clear to the problem and maybe would be ignored.

Here are the details. Virus's are now being transmitted via online play on Modern Warfare 2.

http://www.modernwarfare2.com/forum/...ab94f90850a9aa

Quoted from the IW forums. Link Above.
"It's possible if you host a game for a hacker client, and it's possible if you don't host a game, but are connected to a hacker hosting the game. If the game's net code is not 100% secure then it could be possible to craft special packets of data to cause buffer over-runs (stack smashing). This injects hackers code into your computer, which executes it, and hey presto you have a remote code execution hack. If the code's written well it's possible to make it secure, but stack-smashing bugs are so often overlooked.

Yet another reason we need dedicated servers.
"

Many people are reporting AVIRA or other anti-virus programs detecting these programs. As of yesterday and today, so if you do not have an adaquate virus detector. It's advised you invest or download one from www.download.com

Hopefully someone will have the effort to file a lawsuit against IW seeing as they are responsible for negligence of protection. It must break a law of some kind.

That was me, I was just speculating on the possibilty, however this could still be scare mongering. BUT, think about this:

* Hacker runs remote code on your PC through security hole in the MW2 Listen server net code.
* Hacker gets your steam account info and password
* Hacker hijacks your steam account, runs cheats using it, you get perma banned from Steam

I think people would be wise to stop playing MW2 at least until an official statement has been made to the reality of the situation, after all this could still just be scare mongering.

Didn't IW state that virus protection and firewalls must be disabled to play MW2 online? lol

Not going to happen.

It's a conspiracy.
They've not only put a tampon in our mouths, but they've given us a bottle of water to drink, so that it expands and gets all fluffy.

Basically it means, they've slapped their children, but now, they're bloody annoyed at us for hacking them, so now they're hitting us with a baseball bat.

Game is balanced for crapness.

This was the trojan they were trying to send;

TR/Crypt.XPACK.Gen
Sounds like a false positive of the generic kind.

I like how "it's possible" turns into "viruses are now being transmitted."

It's "possible" with any program that uses custom packets. Which is, really, any game that goes online. It just never happens because there are easier ways to get people to download viruses. Just look at all the people getting "hacked" on WoW (they are downloading keylogger trojans themselves without knowing it)

This is pure bull.

1st they rage on IWNet cause it pretty much sucks and you try to get everyone not to buy the game.

Well, you failed, since the game has 80k players online, and IWNet has no issues at all (at least to me, so yeah get better internets), so yep, you guys failed.

Now, "okay everyone bough, now let's make them not play the game by spreading a virus through game!"

seriously, they should get a life.

It does have issues. IWNet is not as perfect as it should/could be.

I'm just speculating based on the assumption that the reports from people saying they had contracted a virus after playing MW2 online are true. Although I agree, it may well be a fabrication.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 is in the "beta" fase.
If you make something, it's never perfect right from the start, is it?
I think that COD4 was such a good game (looking to the amount of sold units), that they tought: "KAT$HING!". They just made the start as fast as they could, and now they see what the game is becoming... A game where Hackers are able to go their own way...

At least, that's what I think

Honestly I am not doubting that malicious software can't be sent and possibly concealed to look like any other packet. The part I don't believe it that it is gonna execute on a remote machine without user input.

Maybe on and unpatched machine. Maybe

And it can only be transmitted if he knows the ports that you forwarded, and are currently being used + hosted... So the chance of getting one is low
