Arrow Kaizen's Left 4 Dead 2 config

Introduction

Just letting you know that I just released my L4D 2 config. This Left 4 Dead 2 performance config is designed to boost your frame rates (FPS) while maintaining the best possible graphics experience.

It also attempts to improve hit registration (i.e. the accuracy of your shots) by optimizing network settings, improve the visibility of the crosshair, and increase brightness so you can see enemies better.

Unfortunately, as was the case with the original L4D, L4D2 restricts most of the Source Engine’s console commands. Many of the best performance options can only accessed via the in game menu’s. Feel free to tweak any of the settings in this config to your liking, descriptions of what commands do are provided.

Download

Kaizen's Left 4 Dead 2 cfg version 1.1 - Last updated Nov. 21, 2009

INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS
Place this file (autoexec.cfg) into your Left 4 Dead 2 CFG folder,
similar to the path below:

<install folder>\Steam\SteamApps\common\left 4 dead 2\left4dead2\cfg\

REMOVAL INSTRUCTIONS
Simply delete (autoexec.cfg) and (config.cfg) found inside this folder:

<install folder>\Steam\SteamApps\common\left 4 dead 2\left4dead2\cfg\

STEAM LAUNCH OPTIONS
For an additional performance boost, customize your command line
launch options for Left 4 Dead 2 in Steam before starting the game

Setting Launch Options
ŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻ
1. Go to "My Games" in Steam
2. Right click "Left 4 Dead 2" and select "Properties"
3. Select "Set launch options..." and enter the following:

-w 1680 -console -refresh 120 -heapsize 1572864 -high -noforcemaccel -noforcemparms -noipx -nojoy

Customizing Launch Options
ŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻ
-w 1680 Sets resolution to 1680x1050; for 16:10 widescreen monitors - tweak as necessary
-console Enables developer console; so you can press ~ to enter commands
-novid Disables the intro movie, speeds up game on start-up (doesn't seem to work in L4D2 yet though)
-refresh 120 Forces 120hz/120fps refresh rate on monitor (if available)
-heapsize 1572864 Allocates RAM for the game; see table below for calculating optimal values
-high Forces high CPU priority
-noforcemaccel Forces desktop mouse acceleration settings
-noforcemparms Forces desktop mouse button configuration
-noipx Disables IPX network detection, local LAN (slight boot time improvement; you may need to remove this for LAN parties)
-nojoy Disables detection of 3rd party gamepads and controllers (slight boot time improvement)

Heapsize Setting
ŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻ
Modify the heapsize command to allocate 50% of the RAM you have
in your computer (NOT video card memory!) in bytes.

Formula = RAM (in GB) * 1024 * 1024 / 2
1GB -heapsize 524288
2GB -heapsize 1048576
3GB+ -heapsize 1572864

Since L4D2 is a 32-bit application it is believed to be capped at
a maximum of 3GB of RAM. Setting heapsize to a value beyond this
may crash the game.

DO NOT put -high in the launch options, it causes freeze until you set the multicore disabled

No increase in framerate whatsoever, not even 1fps, benchmarked several areas with fraps, no difference.
As far as I can see, all it does is increase gamma and renders your crosshair "static" and red, so you can no longer tell the accuracy of weapons. I don't see how it improves your aiming.
Also triggered a nice runtime error that I never encountered before.

It's for people with low pc, something similar with TF2 config.

Everyone's results will vary in terms of performance increase. If your computer is having no performance issues, you will likely see no benefit in terms of increased fps.

The config also optimizes network settings to improve hit registration, something you would not notice, but would most definitely help your shots hit a little bit better than stock settings. I'm 99% sure that the runtime error you experienced has absolutely nothing to do with the config as the config only modifies console variables and does not affect your system outside of Left 4 Dead 2.

I agree with you though, many people may not like the disabling of the dynamic crosshair, so I will update the help section of the config to state exactly how to re-enable it. Thanks a lot for the feedback, sorry it hasn't helped you much.

I didn't really notice any increase myself, I'm still messing with it. I actually like the new crosshair, it's a lot tighter. The only difference I've noticed is my LERP is now at 33.3 and it flashes yellow or is solid yellow. I may have just not noticed it before but in L4D it was always just white and 100 but when it went yellow that was when I noticed the most lag and stuttering, so I'm thinking constant yellow can't be good. Could you please explain LERP to me in layman terms, I'm no techie. I even removed the autoexec and config files and still the same.

My review: I've only ever been able to play L4D on lowest settings with minor FPS issues. I can run L4D2 on all low with no gore enabled, and it will still lag at random times. With this tool, which I just tested out on single player, I can set several settings to "Medium" and enable gore with no noticeable FPS drop at all.

In all, a highly beneficial tool for me. It turned my game from barely unplayable to barely playable, which is good enough for me! I'm about to try a higher resolution now, wish me luck.

EDIT: Confirmed. One higher resolution works smooth as silk, and online as well. Fantastic tool. I'll be handing over my first-born to Kaizen ASAP, but in the meantime rep will have to suffice.
