L4D2 tips: share your wisdom with other players!

So, there are many things that we don't know as individuals; I only recently found out that a spitter could explode dropped fuel tanks, so why don't we have a thread for sharing our favourite tips!
  • If you're playing versus and you're in a room with team mates for whatever reason (reviving friend, camping) and there's a cupboard/small room, you'll often find that a boomer/spitter spawns in there and takes you out, I find sitting in the door way helps with this and makes the room safe, I don't see anyone doing it! It allows you to cover the little room through view (the boomer won't be able to spawn) and help your friends because you can still shoot in the room.
  • As a spitter if you spit on a dropped gas tank (glowing orange) it will burst into flames, this works on scavenge and versus.
  • Posted by ToN: As a charger jumping mid-charge cancels your attack prematurely and avoids any collisions with walls etc, giving you a chance to swipe at the survivors you would of missed or an escape route.
  • Posted by Mrcod: If you take an adrenaline shot you can halve the time it takes to revive team mates (and heal yourself, others and deploy ammo).
  • Posted by Eviltebor: You do not need to shoot a smoker (although make sure they're dead after!) to free a survivor, if you melee the survivor they will be freed.
  • Posted by chiablo: If a survivor is smoked. being pummelled by a charger or has a jockey riding him, you cannot inflict friendly fire. Feel free to unload on the afflicted survivor until he is free.
  • If a smoker has someone and you free them make sure you kill the smoker or they'll come back and do it again, forcing a 25 second wait is the best thing you can do!
  • Posted by Donatti: You can use Jockey's primary attack to perform small to medium jumps to cut distances through a map, kinda like the hunter's jumps, but less effective of course. You can also use this to confuse a survivor who has spotted you.
  • Posted by Donatti: In versus, there are several spots that are called the "no return zones" or "death spots". For example, in the "Mall" level, when you have to jump over a fallen door and run through a corridor. These spots are potentially deathly if you're using a smoker. You can try to hide and grab the last survivor when the rest have gone through the zone of no return, so you instakill him because his mates cannot get back to help him.
  • Posted by ukalla98: As a Spitter, a Boomer is your best friend. Wait until the Boomer's horde stops the survivors in their tracks, and then spit on them. This hurts them severely without having the spit damage reduced such as when the survivor in question is pounced, pulled or grabbed.
  • Posted by Xokks: When reloading bash away, it doesn't slow down the reload.
If you have a common about to hit you, say you are running backwards and it is just gaining on you bash it away if you're going to get hit. People want to shoot all the time to try and kill things and it's not a natural instinct to bash (Not kill) first to save you taking some damage. You need to converse all the health you can when playing expert.
  • Posted by Xokks:Things like fences, buses, whatever - you stand on the very edge hanging half your body off prevents infected from being able to grip that spot.
  • Posted by AnimaguS: While playing as infected in versus, after the survivors leave the safe room you can choose to spawn there. (Something you could not done in L4D1)
  • Posted by Xokks:
In VS if you're the tank you can go up to a closed safe room door and bash it open if they have closed it with a team mate outside to protect themselves.

So, got any good/helpful tips? I'll add them as they're posted

Being polite to teammates and opponents improves teamwork and results in fewer ragequits. As a side effect, this may also cause a friend invite.

Don't run ahead with melee weapons in Hard Rain. I understand they're new and cool, but please. They have their place and time, and in a downpour is not that time. Stick together and use your guns. They're there for a reason.

In the campaign with the crashed aircraft, it's better to wait inside until there is a lull between hoards before running out. Chances are you will get surrounded and smashed.

Walking witches seem to be fairly placid and will only attack if you come in contact with them.

On realism, the witch will kill (not incapacitate) you in a single hit.

You can kill a zombie by using a gun.

And the pistol is unlimited.

I know this is so obvious but some people just don't get it.

You can free a smokered survivor by hitting the survivor.

Remember that you revive teammates faster after taking an adrenaline shot.

If a survivor is smoked or has a jockey riding him, you cannot inflict friendly fire. Feel free to unload on the afflicted survivor until he is free.

The same is true of chargers, isn't it?

Note with the Spitter: A lot of people believe that once a Spitter spits on a can and destroys it (be it Versus or Scavange mode) that that can is gone forever and the survivors are down a potential point (or, a bit more silly, that they'll never be able to finish the finale for Dead Center).

This just is not true! The can respawns back where it was originally picked up from. If anything, spitters should try and keep track of which orange can came from where, so they can use their precious spit to maximize the traveling distance the survivors have to take.
