Just got my 4890, are these temps normal?
This is under load, mind you.
http://tinypic.com/r/2sahuvk/6 The fan speed adjusts accordingly, btw. |

Yes, that's pretty normal. My overclocked 9600M GS hits 70 on load

Ya its normal, but you might want to manually set that fan speed to 45%-50% (If you don't mind noise). Mines never hit 70C on load for anything excluding Furmark.

Not knowing anything about the 4890...just looking at the pic you linked, i would say you are safe since the graphical temp dial doesn't seem anywhere near the red.

Your good, considering your fan is at 8%
Depending on your card manufacturer you should wait on OC'in. Get a good aftermarket cooler. Some 4890's dont have great stock coolers. (like mine - powercolor) |

It's at 8%, I wouldn't really call that "load". But as others have said, that's actually a pretty average temp (even at near idle) for any kind of stock cooler. Giving the card more room to breathe, improving the airflow in your case, and lowering your room's ambient temp will all help a bit to lower temps. If you are still unsatisfied, look at third-party coolers. It's mostly a matter of how loud and hot you are comfortable with. The GPU will not be damaged even if the temps go much much higher.

My 4870 reaches 75 or even more degrees, depending on the room temperature, at full load with a 90mm fan blowing cold air underneath the card. However, I do have a small HTPC-like case.
From what I've been reading around the net, it's quite normal for these higher-end 4000 radeons to run this high. |

My HD5870 gets 30C idle and about 45/50C load with the fan at 80% with the stock cooler ..it make a lot of noise but I dont want it going past 60C... Last edited by bes: 12-16-2009 at 03:54 PM. |

These days it isn't even the core I'm worried about temp wise, it's the shader/memory that gets hot. Both of these can at times be 10-20C higher than the core which is worrisome.

Yeah i seen some of these tests where they use a heat gun to measure temps and with the HD5000 series cards the core is now a lot cooler than the rest of the card...so yeah its a little worrisome...

The core and the shaders are both on the actual GPU chip right? Only the memory is located elsewhere.
