FOrmatting and reinstalling Windows - how to backup Steam??

Apologies if this has been covered already.

It's time to do a fresh install of Windows (XP Pro) - when I reinstall Steam, how do I make sure I don't lose stuff?

Do I backup the Steam Apps folder? Other folders?

Any tips etc much appreciated.

yes. steamapps folder. copy it to a different location. or use steam's built in game backup feature by selecting the option in the menu.

glad i could help the back-up also compresses the files and offers the possibility to split the archive to fit exactly 1 dvd if it's a big game, so you can write it to multiple discs immediately.

Ok - found the backup tool - when I'm ready, do I just copy the backed up folder back into the fresh reinstall of Steam directory?

You don't have to. Each game/toolset/dedicated server you backed up can be launched from the executable. Just a word of warning, sometimes the backup file size is larger than the default DVD/CD size so it will appear as two discs. You will only have the launch executable in the first CD/DVD so you'll either have to burn the images to CD/DVD or re-do the backup process and define a file size larger than 4.7GB (I use 1 with lots of zeros behind it until the backup file appears as one image). The problem is you cannot mount the second image so once the first one is done installing, it will keep asking you to insert the second CD/DVD.

basically, when you are ready to restore, you just run the installer for each game and wait for it to be decompressed into the appropriate folder.

if you have many games, this can take some time.

Just compress your SteamApps folder using 7-zip (free) or WinRAR ($40). They have faster compressing/uncompressing than Steam's backup tool, better compression etc.

Also they can split archive to multiple files of size you want.
