Thumbs up A list of recommended and helpful mods

Here are the mods I'm currently using. If anyone is using a really good one that isn't here, let me know and I'll add it to the list if I think it adds something nice to the game without unbalancing it.

URLs for each mod are provided, but the easiest way (by far) to get all of these mods is by using TorchLeech, a mod manager for Torchlight that downloads and installs mods with a single click of a button, automatically keeps them up-to-date, and checks for conflicts between them.

Here's the list, in alphabetical order:
  • Additional Gem Availability, by Miniver - A balanced mod enabling the dropping/selling of higher quality gems than just Cracked or Dull.
  • Arithmancy, Thaumaturgy, and Geomancy by Fayd - Combine gems more efficiently and creatively. See the individual pages for info on what each one does.
  • Bee Swarm! by Runic Games - Adds a semi-rare spell to the game called Bee Swarm (only one tier). Will make the caster conjure up a swarm of angry bees (there's a few Bioshock fans at Runic, methinks). Keep checking the spell merchant and you'll find it within a few tries. Not the most useful spell, but it's a good harmless choice if you're going for the Modpocalypse achievement.
  • Better Balanced Sale Prices by Miniver - moderately increases the amount of gold received for selling high-level uniques and rares. I always felt like I got a terrible amount of gold for those. This gives you a good amount without making things feel unbalanced.
  • Better Random Quest Rewards by Miniver - Speaking of getting the short end of the stick on quests, item rewards are hardly ever good in the regular game, and just end up being sold. Here, their quality has been improved so that you may actually want one or two of them (but again, not so much that you're getting awesome things every time).
  • Bigger Gems by Archonyx - Makes gems appear about twice as big, making it much easier to see the often-vague differences between the higher-quality ones.
  • Brighter Map by Anomareh - Very simple, very useful. Makes the normally-dim automap much brighter and easier to see.
  • Enchant Never Wipe by Lenor - I severely disliked the idea of having all your item's enchantments erased from bad luck, leaving you with little more than a sharp stick (especially in Very Hard, where an accident like that could spell doom for you in particularly unlucky situations). Obviously, you can't get the achievements related to disenchanting with this one, so deactivate it once you get enough cash (and bad luck) if you plan on unlocking them.
  • Faster Walking (150%) by Didero - The default walk speed is a bit sluggish; this makes it just right (i.e., it still makes Haste a must-have spell). There's also a double-speed (200%) mod as well - obviously, be sure to only install one or the other.
  • Ferret Pet by Runic Games (ported by Didero) - This additional pet was previously exclusive to the retail version of the game. Cute little bastard (at least until you make it vomit bees and summon zombies).
  • FishMash by bTomfoolery - lets you transmute five fish into one higher-quality fish of the same type, and re-balances the durations so regular fish aren't completely terrible anymore.
  • Gold Sharing Service by KelinTor - Lets you convert certain amounts of gold into scrolls to be placed in the Shared Stash for other characters to cash in.
  • Less Narrator by FlamingPheonix - I can't be the only one annoyed by the narrator (especially since he sounds exactly like Alric). With this mod, he doesn't tell you the bleeding obvious anymore ("You've gained a level!", "Your pet has departed", etc).
  • Loot Border Removal by RnF - Removes the border around objects shown with the alt key. Helps with the "stacking" problem when a boss or champion drops tons of loot in a big pile.
  • Merchant Pack by Lathlas - A compilation of Lathlas's merchant mods, this pack adds several merchants to town and divvies up item types between them nicely (e.g., the Blacksmith doesn't sell ranged weapons anymore; there's now a fletcher nearby that sells them). There's a bonus-dungeon-map merchant, a fish merchant, a spell merchant, and more.
  • More Gem Types by Lathlas - Adds a few more gem types, filling in some gaps that the existing gems don't cover.
  • More Map Types by Runic Games - more map scrolls (other then the Dark Palace) for levels 20-???. Don't know why these aren't already in the game, but regardless, it's one more towards the Modpocalypse achievement...
  • New Stashes and Telekineticist by valdr - Gives you three more stashes, including one by the transmuter so you don't have to run back and forth getting gems and whatnot from your existing stash. Also includes a "telekineticist" by the transmuter for quick access to your shared stash.
  • No Golem Footsteps Sounds by rabbitsox - Mutes the annoying and constant sound of the golems' footsteps. (The sound was turned down just before the game was released, but it can still get on Alchemist players' nerves once in a while.)
  • Persistent Skeletons by droid327 - Removes the duration timer on skeleton summons.
  • Potions Max Stack Size by pwater - So simple yet oh so nice. You can now carry 200 potions/scrolls in one slot.
  • Recipes Deluxe by TormakSaber - Upgrade spells and roll for other random equipment beside rings and amulets.
  • SkillsLeech by Lenor - Previously, only your regular attack properly leeches life/mana from enemies, which is both odd (especially for most of the Destroyer's skills) and annoying. Enter this awesome mod, which adds leeches back into the relevant skills.
  • Small Floaty Text by Skope - Before, after. 'Nuff said.
  • Starch the Monster Hunter by prestige - Adds another NPC to town who will give you quests to kill a certain type of monster in the Shadow Vault. Transmute the map fragments he sometimes gives you to get access to Leviathan, an awesome boss that didn't make it into the final game. Very very cool.
  • Tier-3 (Ancient) Items by SvK151 - There are only two "tiers" of items in Torchlight: regular and Epic, which start to appear around character-level 25-30. This mod painstakingly fills in the gap for high-level characters (60 and up) by adding in a whole new tier [!] of them. "Ancient" items start to drop and appear in vendors around level 55, and they're...quite nice. *evil grin* (Note: TorchLeech will likely detect some conflicts when you first install this mod. If there is no second mod detected in the conflicts, however, the conflicts will be resolved if you run the game once with your character while the mod is active.)
  • Total Respec Mod by Didero - Combines Runic's own respec mod (so be sure to uninstall it before putting this one in) and adds in potions that give you back your attribute points as well.

Hopefully this list will be useful to anyone and everyone in need of a good mod recommendation. Post your mod list here, as well as any questions/comments about this one. Happy torchlighting!

Many thanks, though the never wiping enchants seems a little cheap to getting non stop bonuses lots of these are great.

Don't care for the rep system much but +1 I suppose.

Also that Bee Spell seems fun, though it was never really useful in Bioshock.

Hm, when installing the Tier 3 Ancient weapons mod, it came up with a conflict, it said it didnt have any GUIDs for all the weapons. Uninstalled it for now since I just retired my character, but do you know if it conflicts with any of the other mods in this list? These are the only ones I have.

The Tier 3 mod will give you some GUID conflicts when you first install it, but they went away after I played and quit the game one time. If TorchLeech can't identify a second mod it's conflicting with, you just need to run your character once with the mod and you should be good.

I approve of this message! Having not installed any mods yet, a time will come when I shall, and this will be a good starting point....

One mod that I was thinking about using was how to change the difficulty. But now I'm taking my Destroyer further down into the Shadow Vault, I think I'm just going to keep it on Normal.

Thanks +rep!

Oh you know, reached a certain point, the gun will not really become more powerful. I tried on my pistol, my most powerful one, it had 953, and after 2 more enchantments, it only gained 20 damages.

Also, the second one cost me 10 000, so I think it's balanced enough.

I've got to disagree with you on that one, a high level Swarm of Bees in Bioshock was extremly useful against Big Daddies, especially in the last of the Challenge Rooms ;p

That being said, nice list of mods. I already have a couple of these installed, but I might consider some others in there.

Thank you for this list. Really helpful mods, especially Faster Walking. I was annoyed by the amount of time taken just to explore one floor.

Imaginary Pet

A good mod to use for people who want to play without the pet.

You should probably draw attention to the controversy surrounding the lack of GUIDs in the Tier 3 mod.

Basically, and this is important for anyone installing it, if you upgrade your Tier 3 mod or use another mod that doesn't have its GUIDs set, than you're likely to lose all of the loot you got from that mod. Torchleech is warning you about this, so proceed with caution.

Definitely something worth noting...

Embershield & Frostshield low birghtness
Stops these from burning holes in your eyeballs when used. A little too effective but better.

Starch the Monster Hunter
Adds a NPC which gives an extra quest for each level of the Shadow Vault. Gives a piece of a map for part of reward, transmute 4 pieces to get a new map. Highly recommended

New stashes and telekineticist
Adds 3 non shared stashes in town. 2 at pillar 1 by transmuter. Adds NPC next to transmuter to access shared stash.

Loot border removal
Removes the borders from loot, levers, chests, etc, so only text is visible.

Persistant Skeletons
Stops all skeletons from despawning.

Shocking
Fixes hero skills not scaling with stats/skills.

Total Respec Mod
Adds potions to shop to reallocate stats and skills. (Includes Respec mod so not compatible with it)

Low res texture mod
Can help increase fps. Offical Mod

More maps and tile pieces:
The following add maps which can be bought from NPC to new areas. Some will also add new tile pieces to the mix which can appear during normal play.

Aegis Maps
Yirkon's Palace (Challenging)
Forgotten Fortress of Rukom
Never Maps (Just maps)
Mine Booster Pack (Just tiles)

EDIT: The Low res texture mod will conflict with the Map brightness and Shield brightness mods. Set the priority in Torchleech so low res texture is loaded first i.e. has a higher priority number.
