Crit this build, please.

ASUS ATI Radeon HD5850 GDDR5 1GB PCI-E
ASUS P6X58D Premium X58 DDR3 ATX PCI-E U CPU
Intel Core i7 920 Nehalem 2.66GHz 8MB 13
CORSAIR TR3X6G1600C8D (6GB) 3X2GB DDR3-1600 XMS3 CL8
CORSAIR HX650 650W MODULAR POWER SUPPLY

Could I do any better for a similar price? Slightly more?

Thanks in advance.

This is a pretty solid build. It can pretty much handle any game out on the market without any lag. Are you building this computer yourself or is it prebuilt?

are you...are you kidding? is this another look at my badass computer? Unless you had no idea what the hell you were going to buy, you obviously know this is a great computer.

Sorry, i got off track. upgrade the vid to a 5870 for an extra 150$

haha Well, I know it's good - but wanted to see if I could make it better... don't mind spending a little bit more.

It is indeed another "look at my badass computer"...

You do realize you need to "overclock" to reach your memory speed, right?
Also, you didnt mention if you got / have a heatsink.

No, it's really not. I haven't built for a few years so I'm not totally in the know... thought it would be OK to check first.

I didn't know that, no. No heatsink, yet?

Yes.
Well, they can handle stock speeds, but i7s tend to get pretty hot.
Some folks had a problem with their C0 steppings processors and heatsinks (even when not overclocking), but that changed since the introduction of D0 (you can check this using CPU-Z).

EDIT: @ 666Warlock
You have a 965 right? That processor 'screams' overclock with this open multiplier, and a stock heatsink just...isnt...enough...

i knowwww.

I have 'er clocked at 3.8ghz and it passes prime95 on blend and small fft for 2 hours, no crashes. and I havent even upped the voltages, which is pretty impressive. I did get crashes at 4ghz tho, and when I did up the voltage, it stabilized, but the core went to 60 - 61 and the cpu to about 50.

I plan on getting a better sink when i upgrade the vid card

My i7 860 @ 4GHz requires 1.34v to run stable. My friend's i7 920 @ 4Ghz requires 1.38v to run stable. How are you able to achieve such a high overclock without upping the voltages?

Gaming and DAW work mainly. Working with VST's can get pretty intensive.

Yea if you're doing high end editing the 920 is a good pick. However consider if the relatively small performance increase is worth the extra money over a i5. Imo unless you're actually making money off your DAW work get the i5
