Why No Internet = No Play My Game???

Why is it...that I can not play my Steam game (Half Life) with out internet service?? The game is paid for, and after downloading for a ridiculous 5 hours, I can't play. I installed this game on my laptop, SO I could have some entertainment, when I don't have access to the internet. Why do I need Valve or Steam or anything else in between me and MY game??

Is there a way to play MY game without internet service?

Thanks

... I dunno how many times I've said this...

You don't own the game. You didn't buy the game. You bought a conditional license to play the game. So it isn't even YOUR game.

That was completely besides the point in a thread who's question was answered. That is unnecessary hostility.

Is it possible to enable offline mode AFTER your internet connection has gone down?

It had everything to do with the thread.

The reason it's no internet = no play (most of the time) is because it's a conditional license. So actually, it does have quite a bit to do with this thread. Kthxbai.

Save your steam password on remember and run the game once. If you start steam offline it will prompt for offline mode. And Joe that totally helped the OP? If it meant that much read conditional licence instead of my game.

This.
Many people (mainly zealous Steam defenders) confuse word "rent" with "own".

This will not work if network is functional, but you don't have access to the Internet (provider has problems etc.) - in this case prompt for offline mode will 100% fail (or you will get stuck on 'Steam updating...' message).
You have to kill network to force Steam to use Offline mode.

I tried a test but I'm not sure how accurate a test it was. I put McAfee into
Lockdown Internet mode to block internet access, and then tried to go into offline mode. It went, and some games worked, but some didn't. Defense Grid and Red Alert both gave an error 83. I didn't have the patience to try every game, but of the 5 I tried 2 didn't work.

I'm definitely only going to buy the cheap, $5 and under sale games via Steam.

Which means. Buy it elsewhere?

If its a game you can buy retail its often less aggro to get it that way I find. While you can play many games offline its a pain in the (censored) sometimes.

Sometimes mine works with no issues but sometimes it doesnt. Drives me nuts but fortunately it actually makes me bored enough to plough through some additional work rather than play games so I dont like to grumble too much lol
