Star Wolves Forum

Any chance we could get a Star Wolves forum up?

While I'm at it, are the series any good? I read on metacritic that the official critics didn't like it, but normal players didn't hate it.

What do STEAM'rs think?

I was wondering about the lac of a forum as well.

I bought the package and so far it's pretty cool. I'm starting with SW1 and basically it's a party based RPG combined with Homeworld's ship combat.

A forum for this game would be good.

I'm getting 68 FPS in the first game, but it's chopping so hard it feels like it's at 0.5 FPS. Don't really understand this. Preordered Star Wolves 3 in a hurry once I saw it was available, but this bug (or whatever it is) in the first game is a downer. Can't find an answer for it online.

Edit: Fixed the framerate lag (not sure how exactly), and also found a post on the official 1C forums on how to edit a .cfg file to make the game go to widescreen resolutions. The game is a lot of fun!

For widescreen resolutions:

Go to your Steam\SteamApps\common\star wolves\ folder

Open the file Default.cfg

Edit the line gr_init_resolution "Width" "Height" "32" "TRUE" replacing the default numbers for Width and Height with the resolution of your choice.

Any changes to the in-game options after doing this will revert the resolution, so get your in-game options set the way you want them then do this.

The first game is fun and surprisingly deep.

If there's one thing I learned is that Gunner, Piloting, and Tactician (For the Leader) skills are very powerful and should be leveled up first where possible.

Might try a technician for my second game.

Well I played SW1 back when it first came out and liked it, but some how managed to completely miss out on SW2's existence.

So I would buy and play All three SW games on steam, but it looks like only SW3 is available UK.

SW1&2 have no price or purchase options for me.

Did you happen to miss the promotion where you get 1 & 2 free when you buy 3?

Oh Yea... whoops. Serves me right for posting when I haven't slept for 3 days and hyped up on energy drinks. I'll go quietly sit in the corner now...

I'm sorry.. I have to ask.. what the hell is wrong with the video? The music and sound seemed to have a whine or something in the background. Is that supposed to be in there, or is my audio system not working properly?

Even more frustrating is.. >> How does the game actually play?

All trailers for the game look lame.

Gameplay synopsis, tl;dr version:
- Like Homeworld but no ability to build ships, and you control a Mothership + some fighters.
- More emphasis on Missiles than Homeworld.
- RPG leveling system present for pilots; also have special abilities.
- No multiplay.

Long version:
At the start of the game, the Hero gets shot down in his space transport by pirates and is later taken in by "Ace" who trains you and together you form the "Star Wolves" mercenary. Bad voice acting follows.

You start the game with two pilots and fighters, and get to arm them with various weapons. Primary weapons have unlimited ammunition, and rocket type weapons have to be restocked/resupplied. You also want to install secondary systems into your ship like ECM Chaff/Flares, Anti Missile Lasers, Boosters, etc.

Your mothership is also customizable, with 4 turret slots and 5 secondary systems slots.

The typical combat mission for the first game is:
1. Choose a mercenary offer.
2. Outfit fighters.
3. Accept mission.
4. Enter Zone.
5. Launch fighters.
6. Recon.
7. Refit fighters if necessary/able.
8. Engage enemy.
9. Salvage wrecks, repair/rearm, rescue, and reconfigure a new fighter if your pilot was shot down.
10. Repeat from 5 where necessary.
11. End mission.

Addendum:
- Piloting and Gunnery skills are important, the higher they are, the less clumsy your fighters will be in a dogfight.
- When putting fighters in a wing, they will suddenly behave like again (more for every additional fighter in the wing), but if the Leader has Tactician skills, this effect becomes much less noticeable.
- Missiles are toggled on or off.
- Skills are clicked.
- The mothership is often used to tank since it has huge shields and armor, but it's still vulnerable. Plus, it can't self repair without a specific secondary system. Once you get it though, you'll be spending a while just loitering around repairing.
- If you have good sensors installed (on either MS or fighters) though, you can spend that repair time doing recon instead.
- See above, except with fighter stealth modules.
