Smile Portal 2 Engine

I don't know about you guys, but I'm almost more excited to see what engine will be used for Portal 2 than the actual story.

I'm betting on a modified version of the Source engine and if this is the case, I hope the SDK will be released, I'd really love to map with some more up to date textures and software.

What do you guys think?

Probably the same which was used for L4D2, maybe with a few more features.

The ingame shot from GI looked pretty much the same as Portal 1.

I don't think so, I think it looks slightly better.

If it uses the same as Portal, fine, but I want some new SDK Software :P

I hope the L4D2 engine or even the L4D engine will be used for Portal 2... mostly because those two engines run alot smoother than the source2007 version.

Portal 2 will use the Orange Box engine or a slightly modified version if Valve continues to follow it's trend which it almost always does.

Also, there is no Left 4 Dead 2 engine your ignorance is showing. Left 4 Dead 2 uses the orange box engine.

If you look at the shadow cast by the weighted storage cube in the press images it's pretty clear they're using the same 'stencil' shadows as before. So no improvements on the lighting front, at least... I'm not expecting graphical wonders, but then again Portal doesn't NEED incredible graphics to be an incredible game! We can hope for richer environments though... Portal lacked in the detail department to say the least.

Maybe Valve test a new Overhaul engine .

Wikipedia says that the new engine will use the climate change.

And perhaps in portal 2 some level change from forest to snow (?)

Frankly, I'm pretty sure Valve considers the L4D2 edition of Source a separate version because of the "enhanced AI Director".
Anyway, Portal used a special version of Source modified to handle portals. I don't think this functionality has been included in the editions for any other games as of yet. If that's right, Portal does, technically, have it's own engine. Not that it matters

Incorrect. L4D2 uses the Updated Source Engine. Maps for Orange Box games created in the L4D2 SDK do not work said games.

EDIT; And Portal's version of Source isn't that special; apart from the SCIENCE required to make Portals work, they just place based on textures.

It's all the same engine. Different features are modular and can be added to code to fit each need. It's all based on the same thing - the Source engine, which is open-ended to be customizable if you've got the source code.
