Well, there're Warcraft 3 and Starcraft, of course. Soon Starcraft 2 will be released. There're probably a few others but I'm not really into RTS.

Sword of the Stars, Hearts of Iron 2 (haven't played 3), Company of Heroes, X-Com: UFO Defense, Empire at War, and Universe at War I've all played recently and would recommend.

RUSE is a fun enough game for a beta but the awesome Ubisoft DRM strangles any love for it for when it comes out.

CoH is probably the most amazing modern RTS that also feels like a classic RTS.

I've barely played Supreme Commander but I've heard great things about that game, too.

If you're in to more "new age" kind of stuff, then check out Dawn of War 2 or World in Conflict.

Yes it does look quite bad from the 'fail' reviews... but its main failings appear to be that it bears the C&C name when it just isn't a C&C game (it terms of gameplay at least - I haven't played the beta though). I'm still gonna pick it up when its released (UK) however.

Games I'd recommend include: Company of Heroes, Command & Conquer 3, Dawn Of War II, Empire Total War, Supreme Commander 2, Sword of the Stars and World in Conflict. All of them are good games in my opinion, depends on what class and theme of strategy game you want.

Galactic Civilizations 2 on the turn-based front and Sins of a Solar Empire on the real-time one are the current kings, IMHO. Other excellent options are Supreme Commander (the first), the Total War series (particularly Medieval II), and Company of Heroes as well.

For the more 'hardcore' players there's also Europa Universalis and its Rome spin-off which, unlike the Hearts of Iron series recommended above, actually has a reasonable level of difficulty for us simple mortals.

My two recommendations are Dawn of War II and Empire or Napoleon Total War. Empire and Napoleon are very similar games and I enjoyed them both and my most played game
