Metro 2033 FOV Setting Goodness

So I took the liberty of taking screens, starting at the default FOV, of increasing FOV. Note: There is a Fish Eye effect that you can not see or can not see easily in these screen shots.

The Default FOV is 45. The highest possible FOV is 90. The lowest possible FOV is 1. I have done increasing values of 5 for the field of view to show as many different possibilities without having to do a lot of work.

FOV - 45
Normal View - Zoom View

FOV - 50
Normal View - Zoom View

FOV - 55
Normal View - Zoom View

FOV - 60
Normal View - Zoom View

FOV - 65
Normal View - Zoom View

FOV - 70
Normal View - Zoom View

FOV - 75
Normal View - Zoom View

FOV - 80
Normal View - Zoom View

FOV - 85
Normal View - Zoom View

FOV - 90
Normal View - Zoom View

These images are large in size and resolution.

Just for a little fun though I thought I would try out a FOV 1.

To change your Field Of View you will need to edit two config files. These two config files can be found in the locations as follows.

\User\AppData\Local\4A Games\Metro 2033\user.cfg

The AppData folder is hidden by default, to show this folder you will need to go to Tools -> Folder Options... -> View tab -> Mark the circle next to Show hidden files, folders and drives.

\Steam\userdata\XXXXXX\43110\remote\user.cfg

The X's are to signify a number that is specific to your Steam account, there should(Unless you have multiple accounts) only be one folder in the userdata sub-directory.

You can use this website to calculate the best FoV to use. The FoV in this game is Vertical, not horizontal like most games.

Edit
Note: At 90 FOV, didn't check above 75 FOV, you can see graphical distortions at the bottom left hand side of the screen when holding the combat knife. This can be slightly annoying and distracting. I would suggest trying to stay at 60-75 for this for best results in performance and atmosphere. To much FOV and you find yourself looking through a fish eye lens.

To see your FPS use Fraps, as great program for gamers.

Oh indeed I see what you was asking now.

Indeed I would like to know how you achieved this console(¬) like info.

I do suspect you got it by setting your FOV @ 1 though as your other screens don't have it up, though I could be wrong.
If I am right though I wonder if it can be forced on?

Actually it's a different setting in the config file.

Change "stats off" to "stats on"

It's the fourth line BELOW the sick_fov line.

Thanks alot for posting this info. Does anyone have any idea why the devlopers are going with a 45 FOV? Is this a console thing? I see low fov on any game that has a console port.

It's the vertical fov, not the horizontal that's usually used. On a 16:9 screen, 59 fov would actually be equal to 90 fov in most other games. You can use this nifty thing here to calculate your own fov.

Why thank you.

The default 45 Fov in this game is actually something between 70-75 depending on your aspect ratio. Here's how the menu and game is with an actual 45 degree Fov.
