Steam.exe (main exception): Cannot open blob archive file: CMultiFieldBlob...

Steam.exe (main exception): Cannot open blob archive file: CMultiFieldBlob(mem-mapped file): Failed to open file

Thats the error, it appears when I try to open Steam.
This is not the beta of the new steam and deleting/renaming/moving ClientRegistry.blob DOES NOT fix the issue.
This started occurring when I got home today after not using my computer for a couple of days.

Help please.

Yes, and I really hope I don't have to do this:
"If the above instructions fail to resolve your issue, you should reformat your hard drive, reinstall your operating system, and reinstall Steam to resolve the issue."

I'd remove steam, games, and dive into the reg before that tbh.

Thats like using a nuke to remove a spliter.

I'm having the exact same issue. Steam was working fine until I started Downloading MW2-Multiplayer for the free weekend. Now its toast. I knew that game should be avoided :P

Red face

I'm also having the same problem - After trying to open up my friends list the STEAM - ERROR box came up. Restarting Steam came up with this error and I can no longer launch Steam. I've tried to delete the blob files and have used the methods mentioned in this Steam article. I also don't want to have to reformat my hard drive.

Have you guys tried reinstalling Steam? Be sure to back up your SteamApps folder first so you don't have to reinstall your games.

Cleanly reinstalling Steam

I fixed the problem... Well, I think I did. I did a CCleaner analysis and cleanup and tried to run Steam and it worked. May have just been a coincidence though. Thanks for helping anyway.

Mine just started working again. Everything seemed kind of strange though. Half my games said they were "updating", but really were not. The MW2 thing is all messed up, and had to delete it.But it's ok. Not worth wrecking my steam over it. Sad that they couldn't make it work well.

This solved my issue. I should've checked how much space I had left, but I was certain I had a few gigs. Turns out I had forgotten to disable the trash bin on this installation so whenever I thought I deleted something I just moved it to the bin.

Thank you.

I have the same issue. I was downloading the L4D2 update and steam crashed partway through. On opening steam again I got the error. Cleaning up some space and trying again.

Yep .... only had 6 megs free lol .... that fixed it.
