try resetting the bios. theres a 3pin jumper on the motherboard. with 3 pins 2 of which have a plastic piece on them. take that plastic piece and move it over so the 2 on the other side are covered, leave it for a few seconds and move it back. if you can not do that take the battery out of the motherboard...leave it for 10 minutes and put it back in. if it still does not work you may have fried somethings and its just trouble shooting at that point. you mentioned it being your best computer so you should have another computer you can "borrow" parts from and try to figure out whats causing the motherboard to hang.

Unplug all the drives & then see if it starts. (If it doesn't then pull the vid card out too.) If it works, add things back in one at a time.

From what you described, I'd say lo3's idea is a good one. If that doesn't work, I'd try a different PSU. I'm assuming that the HDD was an IDE. SATA (afaik) is hot swappable. That your machine crashed is a bit odd, and the only things that makes sense, given what you've told us, is that you overloaded the PSU or crashed the OS.

This is all assuming that you plugged everything where it belonged... If you shorted something, you're looking at a bigger problem.

A few more comp specs may be helpful.
