Installing mods?

Im reading on how to install the mods but it gets a little confusing. Mostly it is just telling me dont forget to make a back up. Ok i got that down. But what am i making a back up of and what am i renaming?

Renaming is usually a process of backing up. As to what? Well look into what your mod has folders of, and back up those specific folders.
