BEST way to play this game?

I only just bought the Deus Ex series in Steam's sale yesterday and really want to play the first one. My specs are obviously crazy high-end for this game(i5 750, 5850), so what's the current BEST way to experience the game?

I wanted to move on to mods after my first play-through possibly if I like it, but I've heard something about a "Direct 3D 10 Renderer" which makes it look better by default. So can someone explain what, before playing, should I install etc to make it work well?

Also, I've heard stuff about needing to modify stuff in the game's ini, do I need to as well? I can get 1680x1050 as an option by default.
