A call of duty 4 thread | crashing at startup

Hello all, I just bought and downloaded CoD4. When I try to start up multiplayer, it just crashes, I can't really explain more.
Single player works fine and is great, but I want to play multiplayer.

Windows 7 64-bit
8GB ram
nvidia gtx 260 graphics card

Try
1 go to the control panal
2 go to hardware and sound
3 then double click sound
4 then click the recording tab
5 when u have done that right click and then select show disable devices
6 then when stereo mix comes up enable it and it will work fine

or try

rename mssmp3.asi to mssmp3.bak
in miles folder I think.

try

set the audio quality on 16 bit 44100 (CD quality)

try
disable sound card in device manager just to see if it will run,
...update drivers

try running iw3mp.exe as Run as Administrator.

Of coarse make sure that you don't have any hardware overheating..

Try right clicking on the volume control icon, and click on recording devices.
Right click somwhere in an empty space in the white box and click show disabled devices. Right click on stereo mix and click enable. It worked for me!

If any one still has trouble, I just got this message from steam support.

Quote:
Thank you for contacting Steam Support.

Please exit Steam and go to the folder called C:\Program Files\Steam\ (this is the default location for a Steam installation - if you set a different installation directory, you will need to browse to it).

Delete all of the files in this folder except:

The Steamapps folder and Steam.exe (this file is listed as an application and features the black and white Steam logo)

Restart your computer.

Then, you will need to launch Steam.exe from within the Steam installation folder, and not from a pre-existing shortcut.

With Steam running, re-test the original issue.

Note: This process will not affect your currently installed games.

If the issue persists, view the following article for further troubleshooting:

Title: Troubleshooting Network Connectivity

If you have any further questions, please let us know.

Are you the real Patrick Bateman? If so, what was it like meeting Tom Cruise in that elevator?
