Cant change resolution

I am playing at uni on my laptop (Its below min spec, but i do have a gaming pc back at home). FPS are too low at the 1280x 800 that the screen runs on and I would love to reduce the screen res down to get my FPS up. Problem is when i try scrolling left and right under the resolution box it wont change?- this is even when running windows at a lower res, the game auo-switched to the highest res my laptop supports and I cant change it.

Is there any manual way of changing it or a solution to my problem?

I would like to know if it's possible to change the resolution outside of the game. My screen died just 1 day after I bought this game and now it's stuck on 1280x. my backup screen can only display 1024x and goes all black when I start the game. =(
