Add steam games bought elsewhere?

Is there anyway to add a game that is on steam but, from a CD version I bought at gamestop? Everytime I add Splinter Cell Conviction it won't show it up to my friends and it won't even save the shortcut when I add it to my library.

You can add any game onto Steam and launch it straight from there as a shortcut. Activating a game is a totally different matter though. This is a useful guide for that: https://support.steampowered.com/kb_...7480-WUSF-3601

Aw, so only a few games can accept an activation on steam? I didn't see Splinter Cell Conviction listed on there even though you can buy it on steam.

Well, even if I add a shortcut of it, when I close out of steam and launch it back up again, the shortcut doesn't save.
