Abrasive Sound Glitch

Not sure if anyone else has encountered this problem, but certain actions in the game produce this awful screeching, echoing sound error. So far I've noticed it whenever I catch on fire or pick up health, weapons, and energy. This was happening with my old CD version of the game too, but I hoped the Steam version would fix it. The fact that it seems to have carried over has me thinking that it may be a hangover from the original install, or perhaps something unique to my particular system.

Any suggestions/advice would be much appreciated!
