Is the 480 worth it?
I have a 5870 and was wondering if the new Nvidia card is really worth it over the 5970.

GTX 480 is only 10% more powerfull than a HD 5870 and it produces double heat and takes double the power so no its not worth it

I was thinking to run it in X-Fire mode. But what is the most reliable model for that series?

1. GTX 480 uses more power than any stock ATI card. 2. GTX 480 produces more heat. 3. GTX 480 is only about 10-15% faster overall 4. GTX 480 is over $100 more expensive (including price gouging) 5. GTX 480 is only able to drive 3 monitors with 2 cards in SLI (5870 can do 3) 6. GTX 480 has a fairly loud stock cooling solution. 7. GTX 480's HSF can cook an egg on its grill (possibly a plus) <- joking. BTW, I love my 5870.

I guess you miss the part about "double the heat" and "double the power". That is what I was refering to, hence my statement of "double the post is wrong". One GTX480 does not require 800W PSU or run at 160c just very rough figures. Glad I could clear that up for you. Last edited by General Jameson: 05-05-2010 at 07:19 PM. |

You already have a 5870, you don't need anything more powerful.

You have a 5870 and you're considering a card that costs $100 more, requires 100W more under load, and only offers 10-15% more performance?
I'd rather blow that cash on more games and wait for a bigger boost in performance/IQ. |

If you want to spend money and if you already have a 5870, just get a second one and CFX them.

I also recommend the 5970.
I really don't get why people get the nvidia cards as all of them need a lot more power, produce more heat and cost more. Just don't get why people bother. I really love my 5970
