Just update the engine completely?

Since Valve is about to update CS:S hugely anyways, why not update the engine completely to like the Portal or EP2 engine? (Or just copy the graphical parts, I don't know I'm not an expert at Source) but if you're going to add all these new things, some extra texture detail, motion blur, and better HDR wouldn't hurt.

It's already on the EP2 engine (which is what TF2 uses). The feature list says HDR and motionblur are implemented in the beta

I and some other guy investigated the engine thing yesterday when this came out.

version : 1.0.0.34/7 4100 secure current css
version : 1.0.3.6/15 4198 secure css beta
version : 2.0.1.7 4196 secure (unknown) l4d2
version : 1.0.1.8 4056 secure (unknown) l4d1
version : 1.0.9.0/15 4198 secure tf2

Don't look at the version numbers, because they are individual for every game (left 4 dead being 1.0.X and sequel left 4 dead 2 being 2.0.X) but instead, look at the 4 numbers after that. Notice that the TF2 has same numbers so it's the same engine. I do not have DODS server for comparison but it propably also has 4198. So it is the newest engine there is from Valve.

It is the same for DoD:S almost all updates to TF2 are in conjunction with DoD:S updates (engine wise.)

The version of Source it's using is Source 2007 (it seems). It supports everything OB does - the blood and muzzle flashes currently use Orange Box's particle system. I wish they made a particle effect for grenade explosions.

The Source engine 2007 is the OrangeBox. That's when TF2, Portal and HL2 Episode 2 came out. That same engine has been updated time to time to make it better since it's release.
