Startup Issue
I'm having a problem lauching/startingup my HL2.
I used to be able to play it fine, but now all I'm getting is a black screen, no sound, and my little cursor in the middle of the screen doing the "waiting" icon. Not sure why it's doing this all of a sudden, but I'd really like to play this game! Please help, and thanks for listening. |

Verify game cache files. Usually the first thing you should try when troubleshooting.

Sometimes people with newer computers are finding they have to wait 5 minutes or so for the game to load. But for them it show Not Responding in Task Manager, too, so I don't know if that's your problem. (After the initial long load time, it loads normally.)

Sometimes a firewall is the problem.
Half-Life 2 updates occasionally and your firewall may be waiting for you to give it permission to allow Half-Life 2 (since it had been updated) to load. Gentle |

Thanks everyone for your replies!
So I tried it again the other day, and i thought i would give it a couple minutes to load to eliminate that as a possible problem, and lo and behold, the darn game loads! Albeit after a considerable load time... I just found it odd, since i dont remember it doing that before, or on any of my other valve games. tl;dr - problem solved, somehow :P |

In the slew of all the other posts, I forgot that sometimes, people just need to wait (for like 5-10 minutes). Task Manager will even say it's not responding. From what I understand, after this the game should load normally.
