Startup Issue

I'm having a problem lauching/startingup my HL2.
I used to be able to play it fine, but now all I'm getting is a black screen, no sound, and my little cursor in the middle of the screen doing the "waiting" icon. Not sure why it's doing this all of a sudden, but I'd really like to play this game! Please help, and thanks for listening.

Verify game cache files. Usually the first thing you should try when troubleshooting.

Sometimes people with newer computers are finding they have to wait 5 minutes or so for the game to load. But for them it show Not Responding in Task Manager, too, so I don't know if that's your problem. (After the initial long load time, it loads normally.)

Sometimes a firewall is the problem.

Half-Life 2 updates occasionally and your firewall may be waiting for you to give it permission to allow Half-Life 2 (since it had been updated) to load.

Thanks everyone for your replies!
So I tried it again the other day, and i thought i would give it a couple minutes to load to eliminate that as a possible problem, and lo and behold, the darn game loads! Albeit after a considerable load time...

I just found it odd, since i dont remember it doing that before, or on any of my other valve games.

tl;dr - problem solved, somehow :P

In the slew of all the other posts, I forgot that sometimes, people just need to wait (for like 5-10 minutes). Task Manager will even say it's not responding. From what I understand, after this the game should load normally.
