Portal- Can't enable subtitles only (+ other language-related problems)

Hi, I'm running Portal in English, and I'd like to display the subtitles for dialogues only. But I can't. I get all the captions "peppy music" "ball bouncing (x10)"... Very annoying.

This happens on my two Macs.

Other oddity: if I switch do another language in the audio options, portals warns me that it needs to restart, but it just fail to do it. It quits, and I need to change the language options on the game properties in Steam.

Also: I can't get French captions with English audio (the original voice is so much better). But this works under bootcamp.

Any solution?

I'll add my voice to the pot: same here. I like playing with subtitles just because it helps in cases where a character's voice is momentarily outcompeted by some other sound effect.

Same here.. unable to see Dialog Only subtitle... and I see a LOAD of annoying [BALL BOUNCE] messages that make me unable to read other dialogs :-(

Hi guys! Same here: when I bought Portal with the Orange Box some years ago for Windows, Portal was in english but there where also subtitles in italian (as you can see from Steam Store). Why there are no more italian subtitles in the Mac version?

Also, when I select to use the subtitles only for dialogs, it doesn't work: the game continues displaying also the background sounds, like [opening door] [shooting], etc, while I only want to show me the dialogs.

Valve, please, answer us!

Ok it appears to be a Portal bug that affects virtually everyone who tries to display subtitles. It should be easy to fix I think (at least, the issue with captions).
Hope we'll see a Portal update soon.

Just wanted to thank Valve for being so swift with an update to this issue. I'm now enjoying my subtitles immensely again!
