Could not load library client

Bleh, just got demo, after the intro and game information, i see briefly, a screen that says loading and...... nothing, game crashes with an error that reads "unable to load library client". Anyway, this is a fresh install directly through steam, it's an unpirated demo, so wtf? I am using Win7 x64 but don't think that's an issue.

Try making an exception in your firewall. Here's a Support article.

having the same problem, I've tried firewall protection, DEP, and some launch options but nothing's worked so far.

I've sent an inquiry to steam, hopefully they'll find the problem.

What launch options have you tried? And are you running Windows or Mac?

I'm running Windows 7 (64 bit)
I've tried, -novid, -autoconfig -dxlevel 70/80/90 (one at a time of course)

I have an integrated video card which may be a problem? I've tried this "+mat_bumpmap 0 +mat_picmip 2" from https://support.steampowered.com/kb_...6956-UGCB-7160

Try verifying the game cache files in your Steam Library (right click Portal, Properties, Local Files, Verify Integrity).

And you can try using the launch option -window.

For people still having this problem, the first thing to try is verifying the integrity of the game cache files in your Steam Library. (Right click on Portal, Properties, Local Files, Verify...)

Defragment the files as well.

If that doesn't work, redownload.

Same problem with library client not found error.

Been troubleshooting since day 1. No dice.

This is a laptop, but everything else I've thrown at it works fine.

XP SP3 8800 gts mobile.

They just keep sending me generic cookie cutter solutions to no avail.

Wont be trying anything else STEAM related if this is how their releases go.

What I would suggest is to search the internet. There are several things you can try, but for me to try to link everything here would be a major hassle. (Some people have the problem with CSS, some with L4D2, etc. Suggestions made for those should be modified as appropriate.)

Maybe try reinstalling Steam first, and then if you still have problems, do the search.
