I strongly advise you to disable DirectWrite font smoothing in Settings › Interface when using
this skin, since these small font sizes aren't even remotely suitable for DirectWrite.
Linux users: Read the included readme for instructions how to install this skin on Linux.
A few issues with fonts requires some manual work.

I seem to be getting No Hot-linking errors when viewing the links (try imgur), either way, steam does really need a proper minimal skin.

Good luck with the skin and I hope it turns out how you want it to!

Sorry, I didn't know that they had changed their policy. Links should work now.

Considering the amount of criticism the new Steam skin has received these last couple of months I have to admit that I'm a bit perplexed by the lack of replies to this thread. Not even negative replies!

That would be because your skin isn't much better than Valve's.

Try to play around with it more. Maybe you can make something even better. Don't get discouraged, pick yourself up and try to make something even better. The greatest things in life don't always achieve greatness right away. You need to continuously improve upon your design and make it better. If it doesn't work maybe you can try to start from scratch. Sometimes doing something over again and rethinking how it is implemented can go a long way.

It would be easier to evaluate the skin if we could use it .

Care to elaborate? Or were you just looking to get a punch line in there?

Oh, I plan to, I'm far from finished. My current changelog has 79 entries/changes and that has brought the version number up to 0.5.0. I haven't made a lot of work with the colours yet for instance, more than removing all gradients from text areas. I have other things planned that I want to get done before I start looking at colours. An example would be having a "open Small mode" button available directly on the Friends list — if possible — and other fairly significant changes.

Yeah, I know. I've been a bit hesitant about that, since you currently have to replace original files in Steam\resource\layout\ due to the rearrangement of the headers as well as the removal of the Library group. But since my 7 testers have been so positive about the changes so far, I thought I'd see if there's anyone out there who's interested. With enough "demand" it would have been worth releasing a test version despite that skinning issue.

I personally feels that you have gone to great lengths to make the UI more annoyingly than ever to use. At least the the original has some space here and there, yours is just one big pile of messy stuff rearranged to annoy the hell out of the user everywhere. And how the hell do you get to the downloads or tools tab?

The only thing looking half-interesting is the overlay, but the lack of widescreen and that ugly grey leftover box from the old positions removes the interest a bit.

Needless to say I think yours is too cluttered.

It sounds like you personally aren't the kind of guy who wants a really compact skin (and that's perfectly fine in my book), so I can understand that you don't see any benefits with my skinning project.

The downloads tab is only used during downloads, at which point you can access it by clicking "x items downloading". Therefore I removed the header to try to avoid clutter (ironic, isn't it?). "Tools" is a separate header readily available, which can be seen in 3 of the screenshots.

Due to how the skinning system for the overlay works I've made it so that it works in every resolution from 1280x800 and upwards. I would love to make an overlay that fits my 1920x1200 resolution perfectly but that would break the overlay in all smaller resolutions. I'm not sure what you mean with the "ugly grey leftover box". If it's the background for friends, clock and achievements up top I agree that it needs more work. I have as previously stated not put too much time into fixing colours the way I want them yet. So that will be improved.

clutter
One thing that can be done to reduce clutter is to bring back the library tab, and insert the sub-cats directly after the library, then style to recieve a nice polished look: http://i.imgur.com/FGdNt.png (use grouping to hide the links when another tab is selected, and keep grouping on the drop, and shift that into the main tab bar, add styling to that)

Any chance of you releasing a beta of this? Or possibly even just the overlay itself? I love the overlay!)
