HL 2 doesnt start on Mac

I just downloaded HL 2 on my Macbook pro 10.5.8
When I start it I get stuck on the loading screen until I shut it down. What could be the problem?

You can check this Support article--that Mac stuff is about halfway down.

If that doesn't help, you might want to try the Mac forums. You might get some help here, but you'll likely have better luck there right now.
