Ways to increase online connectivity and speed.
I was plagued with a terrible internet connection for a pretty long time, and I recently dealt with it. It really helped me, so I figured I'd post them here incase anyone else is having trouble online. First of all, I'm gonna post the router IP's for a few companies, and if yours isn't here, just google it, it shouldn't be hard to find.
Belkin 192.168.2.1 DLINK 192.168.0.1 Linksys 192.168.1.1 Netgear 192.168.0.1 1) Opening your NAT. The first thing you should do if your NAT is strict (or moderate) is open it up. Type your router IP into your address bar, login (admin, no password unless you set up a user/pass already) and find your UDP Endpoint Filtering and TCP Endpoint Filtering options under the NAT Endpoint Filtering section. For Dlink, it should be under Advanced -> Firewall Settings. You may have to search around for the other routers. Choose Endpoint Independent for both, and there you go. 2) Setting a manual IP for your Xbox. First, go to the start menu -> run -> type cmd. This'll bring up a DOS window, type in "ipconfig /all". Open up a notepad and write down these: IP Address Subnet Mask Default Gateway DNS Servers Now, go to the Xbox menu -> Settings -> System Settings -> Network Settings -> Configure Network. Choose Manual IP Settings. For the IP Address, type in a number that is about 10 above your computer's IP address. For instance, if your IP is 192.168.0.154, make your Xbox's IP 192.168.0.164. Then put in the same Subnet Mask and Default Gateway numbers you copied down previously. Next, choose manual DNS settings, and type in the numbers you wrote down for that. 3) Finally, we're going to port forward your Xbox. The Xbox can forward these ports: TCP 80 UDP 88 UDP 3074 TCP 3074 UDP 53 TCP 53 To do this, go back into your router configuration. Look around for a Port Forwarding page. On my page, its under Advanced -> Port Forwarding. For name, put whatever (xbox1, xbox2, xbox3) and for the IP put down your Xbox's IP address. Under TCP and UDP, fill in the numbers above. Save, reset your modem/router/xbox/whatever, and voila. The router config I was specifically working with was the Dlink DIR-615 so if your router webpage is really different I apologize and if you really can't find out what to do, I'll try to look it up for you. I used a couple of guides to figure this out myself. If anyone has additional content to add (ways to improve speed or how to access specific things in other routers) feel free to post and I'll add it to the main post. These worked unbelievably for me, so hopefully they can help you as well. Last edited by PropaneTankHank: 06-03-2010 at 03:19 PM. |

To express how much it helped, previously I couldn't join any Red Dead Redemption online games at all, nor could I join Bioshock (though I could start some). As soon as I forwarded the ports/made my IP manual, I started to connect to games instantly, with no lag or problems whatsoever.

Yeah, I've only played it for a few days since, but I haven't disconnected once. Before that, 95% of games I failed to join, the other 5% I got disconnected within 5 minutes.

This is how my router was always set up, then I moved, and my family messed with all the settings while I was gone...
Then I came back, and thanks to your thread, just re-checked my settings only to find that someone had gone through my xbox ports and changed each individual IP to some random IP. Fixed, and my connection is back to what I remember back in the day before I moved. Awesome thread. Should be stickied. |

Yeah, like Wylde said, just copy down the changes and you'll be fine. Each of these have been endorsed and suggested by Microsoft for fixes for online connections so unless something really bizarre happens, you should be a-okay. If something does happen, I'll be glad to try and help you find a solution.
I still can't express how much this has improved my online play, I barely red bar anymore and I find myself with a green connection for the majority of my games, which never used to happen. Hope it helps everyone else too. |

But what if my connection is already fine and it's only L4D2 which lags to unplayable standards?

Yeah, it won't hurt anything, but if you try it and you notice no difference or you somehow have a worse connection, you can just change it back. Nice and simple!

For port forwarding, should I use the "All ---> UDP ##" and "All ---> TCP ##" options or the " <first number> ---> UDP <first number>" and "<second number> --->TCP <second number>" options? In other words, my router enables either to route all ports to certain ports, or gives me the option to only forward to specific ports data comes in on certain ports. Does it matter, and if so, which will work better and not cause havoc with my other devices?
Also if anyone else has the Verizon FiOS router, please tell me where to find Endpoint Filtering or whatever Verizon's term for it is. Last edited by Keithustus: 06-08-2010 at 03:55 AM. |
