Black screen on loading fear1 (resolved)
Edit: FOUND SOLUTION! This is from the Fear game readme - under "VII. KNOWN ISSUES - Graphics" "* If you get a black screen on launch and have ACE Mega CoDecS Pack or similar codec packs installed on your computer, you will need to disable installed codices from the CoDecS Dashboard settings screen before running the game. Please note to which codices are being disabled so those codices can be enabled at a later time."
Indeed I bought F.E.A.R 1 off steam - that comes with the 2 expansion packs.. or whatever they are.. And I double click to load it.. (or any of the others) and it just gives me a black screen and done nothing :S I've tried updating my graphics drivers 197.13 to the latest 197.45 nvidia drivers.. and still the same problem. Here's my rig: Win XP Pro - Service pack 3 Intel dual core 6600 @ 2.40 ghz with 2gb ram. Nvidia geforce 8600 GTS. 2 hard drives - 320gb (main), 1tb (secondary - i store my steam on this one) I've had no troubles with other games.. just F.E.A.R doesn't wanna run.. I really dunno y. And yes I downloaded the whole 16600 of it.. and i don't wanna download the whole bloody thing again. Last edited by Fujian: 06-05-2010 at 08:46 AM. Reason: so certain codecs pack interfere with fear |

First thing to do is verify the game files. Click on the Steam icon in the Tool Bar. Choose Libraries. Right click on the game in the list, choose Properties> Local Files tab> Verify.
If that doesn't work, then try reinstalling Steam. But first copy the "steamapps" folder to another spot on the hard drive, that way you just copy it back over once Steam is reinstalled. All your games will be intact. |

Run the config.exe in your fear directory. In options try disabling movies. Maybe its the start up videos giving you problems.

Well I guess all you have left to do is officially contact steam, or whoever is in charge of the F.E.A.R technical problems. They'll be able to help you!

grasping at straws here, but could it be that an antivirus program or something is keeping the game from launching properly?

AVG has been known to cause issues with Crysis, so it could be that culprit here too if the OP is indeed using AVG.

I'm using norton internet security 2010
![]() I had a read through the readme and my problem was there.. Anyone who has the "Ace mega codecs pack" installed has to disable all codecs from that pack before playing fear. I have heard of avg blocking alot of programs.. plus I had a bad experience with avg crashing my laptop due to it using too much ram. I disabled my ace mega codecs pack and now fear works fine ^_^ YAY!! Thanks to everyone for ur speedy help. Much appreciated! |
