What happen when a 32 Bit Processor run on 64 Bit Windows?
Hi, as the subject line ask, I just wonder what happen, because I'm running on an older PC which is a 32 Bit PC, and a 32 Bit CPU, but my PC spec is capable of running the 64 Bit windows but the problem is just only the CPU doesnt support 64 Bit Windows, and because of I used to read the difference between 32 Bit and 64 Bit, but I just wonder is it possible for my pc to install the 64 Bit windows without damaging my processor?
here is my PC spec: Intel Pentium 4 550J HT 3.4Ghz 3.2GB of RAM (2.89GB Usable, 3xGB, 1x256MB DDR400 PC3200) 660GB (1X160GB, 2x250GB Serial ATA) ATi HIS Radeon HD 4650 512MB PCI-E Windows 7 Ultimate (Build 7600) and I have about 4x2GB more, from my cousin which he wont use it n has gave to me, but If i can install the 64Bit PC, I will upgrade all the RAM to 8GB. If you are correct, you just taught me something new about processors. I thought there was no such things as a 32/64 bit processor. The difference is in the Windows software itself. You pick 64bit if you want to have 4GB or more of RAM.

You won't be able to install a 64-bit operating system on a machine with a 32-bit CPU.

According to intel it Has I64A for large memory access enabling it to address 64bit for memory but I don't know if a 32bit os can use it all!

You have answer the exact sentence as I expect someone would give this answer, so if I want to install the 64Bit windows then I will have to get a new processor, and which processor should it be? can u suggest some of the budget processor that is kinda popular?

You won't even be able to start the install of a 64-bit OS if your CPU doesn't support 64-bit.
Call it a safe guard against terrible disappointment.

as I read and understand from the support page - difference between 32Bit and 64Bit in MS Technet, they said sth like the 32Bit can address about 3.3GB of memory (assuming you have more than 3.5GB RAM).

In order to answer this, we need to know what motherboard you have and what your budget is to upgrade.

Is that a Socket 478 motherboard? In that case, a completely new build is in order.

Pentium 4 and before are 32 bit CPU's on Intel's side, Athlon and before for AMD's side. No, 64 bit wont work.

That chipset isn't going to support anything but the P4's. You're going to need a new computer if you want to upgrade to a 64-bit OS.
