Fixed the issue
I HAVE GOT VICE CITY WORKING ON WINDOWS 7 WITH NO COMPATIBILITY MODES If you are getting an "Unhandled Exception - C0000005 at 006F6330" error every time you try to run GTA, keep reading. As you can see below I had a problem with Vice City, but I've *just* discovered how to make it work. The problem lies with Windows 7's DEP (Data Execution Prevention) To fix it, do the following: Delete .set file from your Documents\Vice City User Files folder Open the Start menu, in the search box type "advanced system settings". One result will appear, click it. In the window that opens, click the Advanced tab, then the first Settings button Go to the "Data Execution Prevention" tab, and click "Add..." to add an exception. Browse to your gta-vc.exe and select it. Now "OK" all the dialogs until they're closed. |

I just bought the GTA Classics pack from the sale and was running into this issue with both GTA3 and Vice City. Thanks for posting this, both my games are launching now!

This did not help me for Vice City. Worked perfectly for 3, though. Anything else I can try?

If you guys are still getting this error, try disabling dep entirely instead of trying to add just gta-vc.exe to the list. If it doesn't work then I'm afraid I don't know

I'm bumping this because it's a problem that gets worse with time, since the GTA3 engine is the most unstable piece of trash ever...
Since Service Pack 1 for Windows 7 was released, none of the tips on this or other threads/forums/fan-sites have helped. When I try to run Vice City, the screen flashes a few times, and that's it. To solve this, I've done the following; 1. Turned off Windows Aero (advanced themes) 2. Set compatibility mode; Win XP SP2 + Run as admin (I've also tried all other possible combinations) 3. Added Data Execution Prevention 4. Tried switching processor performance priority from main processes to background processes. None of these methods, or any combinations thereof, makes any difference at all. I don't even get error messages. The only way I can get the software to respond is if I set compatibility mode to Win 95 (because it doesn't run on 95, so I get the standard error for this), OR, if I turn off my 'off-board'-video card (that is; switch to on-board graphics.. I'm on a gaming-laptop). If I do this, I finally get an ERROR MESSAGE; Unhandled exception: c0000005 At adress: 006f5330 This is where I get stuck though. I'm all out of ideas now. |

Another success story
Re-installing all my Steam games after the hard drive ate it, and so far the following games have all failed on initial install and started working after adding the main .exe to the DEP exception list.
GTA 3 GTA SA GTA VC Half Life Half Life Op For Half Life Blue Shift Day of Defeat CounterStrike HL games failed with no error or would get to the main screen but not be able to change from 640x480 software mode. D3D still fails but OpenGL works for 1920x1080. GTA games died with the Unhandled Exception popup hidden, all three ran and allowed video setup to complete. |

DEP, Aero disabled, Compatibility mode and nothing. Well, I've managed to play 3 hours in GTA VC but then, I've just loading my previously saved game at a house opposite to Rosenberg's office and I can't play anymore. I will try to run it on Virtual Machine but that can be very hard.
